Alka Yagnik diagnosed with hearing loss: Check causes, signs to watch out for

Singer Alka Yagnik, 58, took to her Instagram to share that she has been diagnosed with sensorineural deafness. The singer shared how she realized she was unable to hear anything following a seemingly innocuous flight ride.

What is sensorineural deafness?

According to a Healthline report, sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occurs as a damage to one's inner ear structures or auditory nerve.

According to the report, SNHL is the cause of more than 90 percent of hearing loss in adults.

Common causes of sensorineural hearing loss or deafness include exposure to loud noises, genetic factors or aging.

Here are some early signs of hearing loss you must watch out for.

A feeling that sounds are dull or muffled, even when the volume seems normal.

Difficulty in following conversations particularly when there's background noise. You ask people to repeat themselves frequently or ask them to speak louder even if they seem to speak normally.

Trouble hearing high-pitched sounds such as children's voices, birds chirping, or the doorbell.

Ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus is common in SNHL. It can be a whooshing sound or a constant ringing.

Feeling of fullness in ear or a sensation of something blocking your ear canal.

SNHL can affect your inner ear, leading to difficulty in balancing or dizziness and vertigo.
