The concept of good vs. evil is at the heart of almost every movie ever made, but how that antagonistic force takes shape always varies. We can look at certain genres, such as superhero films or horror movies, and envision what a villain looks like. Sometimes they'll wield a knife or an axe, or perhaps they'll attempt to destroy the world to gain incalculable power. But arguably some of the most terrifying antagonists in films can't be visualized in the same way, because they all emanate from nature; if nothing else, they become so much more terrifying specifically because you can't reason with these antagonists and they have no sentience like human beings.
A natural disaster is at the heart of the big movie of the week, Lee Isaac Chung's long-awaited "Twisters," a follow-up to Jan de Bont's 1996 film all about storm chasers in Oklahoma. But natural disasters...

The historical drama Those About to Die brings the world of ancient Rome to life with Anthony Hopkins commanding the screen as Emperor Vespasian. Directed by blockbuster director Roland Emmerich, the series plunges viewers into a world of political intrigue and brutal spectacle. Enthroned Amidst Chaos A standout element of the series is how it balances its expansive historical canvas with intimate character drama. Hopkins portrays Vespasian, a seasoned general whose later years see him assuming imperial power. Playing the elder statesman with his usual gravitas, Hopkins’ presence anchors the narrative even though he...

Harry Connick, Jr. is heading to the Mediterranean Sea. In the new romantic comedy Find Me Falling, the singer and actor plays a role that may initially seem like familiar territory for the singer and actor: a rock star. But that’s where the similarities between Connick and his character, John Allman, end. “He’s playing against type as a brooding, tattooed, lonely rock star,” writer/director Stelana Kliris tells Tudum. “We couldn’t have asked for a better fit, and on top of that, he wrote two fantastic songs for the film.”
“I just absolutely loved it,” Connick tells Tudum about his initial reaction to the script. “I thought it was heartfelt and romantic and smart and tragic and all of those things, and it just looked like an experience I wanted to be a part of.”

Every streamer gets the “Game of Thrones” copycat it deserves. HBO, the original house of the dragons, can lay claim to an official prequel series that’s slavishly devoted to its predecessor. Prime Video, which would be the Scrooge McDuck of streaming if not for Apple TV+, can spend all of McBezos’ money rebooting “The Lord of the Rings,” yet still end up with a naggingly laborious “Rings of Power.” Netflix, always happier to buy talent than develop good ideas, hired “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to turn a “3 Body Problem” into a three-season snooze (replete with problems that plagued their last few seasons in Westeros).
There are others — some, even, quite successful — but let’s steer our dragons toward the latest attempt: Peacock’s “Those About to Die” leans on epic political machinations, brutal violence, and cold, calculating characters to sell its saturated vision of...

Tom Cruise wanted to work with Steven Spielberg again after their success with Minority Report and offered the director three options of films to create together. One of the choices was an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. It was Spielberg’s third film exploring the subject of alien invasion and Josh Friedman delivered a screenplay, which was then rewritten by David Koepp.

We’re midway through the month of July with only a few more weeks to the summer, and it’s time to get into the next potential mega-blockbuster, “Twisters.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Summer blockbusters have existed for as long as Steven Spielberg has been making movies, but it was only in the mid-’90s when studios realized that they could create movies considered “event viewing” that moviegoers would want to rush out to see opening weekend. The Jan De Bont-directed “Twister,” co-written by Michael Crichton (and actually executive produced by Spielberg through his Amblin company), was one of these back in 1996. Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, as well as an ensemble cast that included Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, and even future filmmaker, Todd Field, it opened with $41 million in its early May 1996 release, which was good for that time. Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Picard
The new generation series Star Trek: Picard brought back many fan-favorite characters from The Next Generation, including Sir Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner’s Data. The latter especially was a surprise to fans as he was shown to have sacrificed himself in the last original film Star Trek: Nemesis.
While Spiner had reportedly refused to return to the series, he was convinced by one key aspect of the new show. He mentioned that the chance to not spend hours in his signature yellow/gold makeup and removing it was an appealing factor for him to return.

It's fair to say no one goes to a Roland Emmerich movie expecting Shakespeare. Ever since breaking through with the sci-fi action hit "Universal Soldier" in 1992, his name has been synonymous with switch-off-your-brain blockbuster entertainment. At his best, he thrusts a colorful assortment of stars and character actors into a series of mayhem-laden set pieces with a gleeful shamelessness unseen since the heyday of Irwin Allen. He's well aware of his dialogue-writing shortcomings, and casts big personalities like Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Oliver Platt and so on to sell the heck out of his implausible exposition and shopworn banter.
When it works, it's Arby's. When it doesn't, it's hour-old Arby's.
Take "Stargate" for example. Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin's follow-up to "Universal Soldier" was an ambitious, big-budget attempt at an off-brand Indiana Jones adventure starring James Spader as a bookish Egyptologist who gets recruited by a...

Actor Jonathan Frakes gained fame as the USS Enterprise-d’s first officer William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He starred along with Patrick Stewart, Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton, and Brent Spiner among others in the show and even returned for the films. He also directed multiple episodes in the series.
Frakes helmed the third film featuring the Tng cast Star Trek: Insurrection. The film saw the Enterprise rebel against the Starfleet after knowing that they would be aiding in the Son’a’s conspiracy to steal resources from the Ba’kus. Frakes mentioned that after showing a cut to the studio they had one demand from him and he had to fulfill it.

Horror was in a bit of a funk in the late 90s. Then 25 years ago, in July 1999, The Blair Witch Project came along and changed everything.
In a 1996 article published in The Philadelphia Enquirer, film critic Desmond Ryan bemoaned the state of mainstream films. Citing such films as Independence Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Eraser, and that year’s hurricane thrillride Twister, Ryan argued that Hollywood had become more interested in special effects than logic or character.
“It all began,” Ryan wrote, “when Twister’s killer tornadoes sucked up everything in their path – tractors, cows, common sense, continuity, plausibility, and the quaint notion that movies should have characters you care about.”
By the end of the 1990s, the horror genre appeared to have descended into a creative funk of its own. Of the horror films released toward the end of the decade, many of the most high-profile examples were remakes or sequels in somewhat tired franchises.

It can seem that the science fiction genre went through a crisis right after the success of the Wachowskis’ Matrix in the 2000s. If we ask you to name at least 2 gems of the genre that were made in that decade, it’d probably be a problem recalling them.
However, it’d be unfair to say there weren’t decent sci-fi films at all, as back in 2009 the world saw a 90%-rated gem that is still recalled by Reddit. It is even getting dubbed ‘absolutely brilliant’ by fans who claim it’s still a must-watch for every sci-fi veteran.

If you think of modern sci-fi gems, which movies do you recall? Maybe it’s Denis Villenueve’s Dune franchise, or Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, or you’re a fan of Blade Runner 2049 with our favorite Ryan Gosling, and all these movies are truly perfect.
However, they all can be beaten by the 2016 movie that is not at such a hearing, but still offers an impeccable sci-fi story that somewhat breaks the genre’s canons.
Its plot revolves around Louise, a linguistics professor whose calm life is interrupted by an alien invasion. The point is twelve extraterrestrial crafts land all around the world, and their motives remain unknown, until Louise is recruited to study them.
She teams up with a team of experts to find a way to communicate with the uninvited guests, and the more she learns about aliens, the more she learns about her own life.

A Quiet Place: Day One is the highly anticipated prequel film to John Krasinski‘s sci-fi film franchise A Quite Place. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the apocalyptic horror film shows us the day when the aliens in A Quiet Place franchise invaded Earth, and instead of the Abbott family, we see the story of a terminally ill woman who tries to survive in New York City with her cat and an English law student named Eric. A Quiet Place: Day One stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in the lead roles, with Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, Eliane Umuhire, and Nico & Schnitzel starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the intense survival thriller and alien invasion elements in A Quiet Place: Day One, here are some similar films you could watch next.

How far does the dial have to move to take a holiday from festive to fucked up? At least since the events of “Jaws” hit Amity Island, Fourth of July celebrations have served as frightful fodder for satirists, who have used the summer holiday as an opportunity to lambast the all-too-obvious dark side to our country’s blood-spattered stars and stripes.
The best Fourth of July horror movies make use of both their seasonal setting and thorny subject matter. There’s something innately disturbing about taking a day that should be celebratory and re-packaging it in that twisted carnival aesthetic — dripping with oversaturated reds, whites, and blues. Every year on July 4, IMDb sees a huge surge of interest in Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi classic, ‘Independence Day,’ as indicated by page views. The film became the biggest box office hit of 1996, raking in $306 million domestically on a budget of $75 million. The competition wasn’t soft, either. Blockbusters like ‘Twister,’ ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘The Rock,’ and ‘The Nutty Professor’ were released the same year. In celebration of the film’s enduring popularity, IMDb has pulled together some of its favorite trivia to bring another layer of entertainment while watching (or rewatching) ‘Independence Day’ this year.
Here are some noteworthy fun facts, submitted by IMDb users:
‘Independence Day’ Holds the Record for Most Miniatures and Models in a Film
“Holds the record for most miniature model work to appear in one film. Model shop supervisor Michael Joyce estimated that more miniatures were used for this film than in any other two films combined. Due to the advances in digital technology since this film's release, most experts believe this record may stand forever.”
“The production's model-making department built more than twice as many miniatures for the production than had ever been built for any film before, by creating miniatures for buildings, city streets, aircraft, landmarks, and monuments. The crew also built miniatures for several of the spaceships featured in the film, including a thirty foot destroyer model, and a version of the mother ship spanning twelve feet.”
The Title ‘ID4’ Was Created to Avoid Legal Trouble
“The abbreviation "ID4" was invented due to legal problems with the title "Independence Day". Before 20th Century Fox reached a deal with Warner Bros. for the rights to the title, they suggested the film be called "Invasion", "Sky on Fire", "Doomsday", and "The End of The World", among others."
Area 51 Was a Touchy Subject with the U.S. Military
“According to producer/co-writer Dean Devlin, the U.S. military had agreed to support the film by allowing the crew to film at military bases, consulting the actors who have military roles, etc. However, after learning of the Area 51 references in the script, they withdrew their support.
Only One Real Airplane Was Flown on Screen
Except for the bi-plane during the crop-dusting scene, any airplane seen in the air in this film is either a model or computer-generated effect.
The Script Was Written in Four Weeks
Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich penned the script in four weeks. It was sent out on a Thursday, and they started fielding offers the next day. By Monday, they were in pre-production.

It has been difficult for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach or surpass the bar created by itself after the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. With a score of 94% on the list, it was more than just a film for Marvel fans. The theatres were filled to the brim with die-hard fans who felt every bit of emotion throughout the 3 hours and were left in tears at the end. All in all, a 10/10 movie-going experience.
Avengers: Endgame (2019) | Marvel Studios
For a survey, over two thousand people took the time to vote for the best summer blockbusters of all time, and to no one’s surprise, Avengers: Endgame is on the list, right at the second spot. In fact, it is one of the three MCU films on there. However, Marvel fans wholeheartedly believe that it should’ve been ranked number one instead of Steven Spielberg’s iconic Jurassic Park.

Will Smith hit the BET Awards stage Sunday night to perform a brand-new song, “You Can Make It,” backed by the Sunday Service Choir, Chandler Moore and Kirk Franklin.
Smith kicked off the performance standing on what was meant to look like lava, surrounded by fire, and rapping lyrics including: “The darker the hell you gotta endure / The brighter the heaven you get to enjoy / The harder the fall, the higher you soar / God opens a window when the devil closes the door / Believe me, they tried to bleed Will Smith / In the rearview, I see adversity was the gift / To lift me higher gifts requires faith / So dry your eyes and then you’ll find a way / Out of the madness, out of the maze / And out of the saddest into the rays / The darkest of nights turns into day / And every storm runs out of rain.”

Science fiction has always been one of the most beloved movie genres, as people’s speculations about the future and its technologies are never-ending. You surely watched (or at least heard of) such franchises as The Matrix, Alien, Men in Black, and Planet of the Apes.
If you miss good old sci-fi flicks made in the era where there were no computers and phones, good news for you! Quite soon, it’ll be possible to revisit an 80s trilogy that hits the very nostalgia button and, luckily, arrives on Netflix next week.
Set in 1985, the plot of its first chapter revolves around a teenager who is sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling machine built by a quirky scientist. There he meets his parents and accidentally prevents them from falling in love, therefore, his own existence is now in question. It’ll be a challenge for him to make them reconcile...

One of the more unusual creative choices made for Roland Emmerich's 1998 film "Godzilla" was to make it into, essentially, a comedy. In its structure, "Godzilla" is a straight-up adventure blockbuster, replete with the trappings of city-sized destruction and international mayhem that Emmerich typically handles with such aplomb. In its tone, however, "Godzilla" is light and breezy, and focuses on the human character Nick Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) and his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the aspiring reporter Audrey (Maria Pitillo). Audrey feels stymied in her career by a lascivious, egotistical boss Charles Caiman (Harry Shearer) who implies that he'll give her a promotion in exchange for sexual favors. One might also notice that Caiman's secretary is played by actress Nancy Cartwright.
Insulted and disgusted by Charles, Audrey instead takes to the streets of New York with her cameraman Animal (Hank Azaria) hoping to catch footage of the rampaging iguana monster stalking the streets.

More than a million and a half people live on the island of Manhattan. “A Quiet Place: Day One” focuses on two: Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), a Stage 4 cancer patient, and Eric (“Stranger Things” actor Joseph Quinn), a far-from-home stranger she stumbles upon after the noise-sensitive aliens crash-land in New York. Neither one seems to have much in the way of survival instinct, which makes them an odd couple on whom to concentrate the Big Apple-set prequel to 2018’s hit creature feature — which is probably why writer-director Michael Sarnoski (“Pig”) decided to give Samira a cat named Frodo. People are expendable, but no one wants to see a service animal torn to shreds by aliens.
Call me macabre, but I expected to see a lot more carnage than Sarnoski’s dismayingly sappy spinoff provides. Just about every scary shot the movie has to offer appears in the trailer — including a...

It’s great to end the first half of 2024 with its biggest hit still churning out unexpectedly huge grosses as “Inside Out 2” (Disney) is doing. With over $388 million in U.S./Canada ticket sales after 12 days, it could reach as high as $600 million — more than double pre-release high-end projections.
It’s way too soon to know whether this is a portent of how other highly anticipated titles from the rest of the year will do, or if it’s sui generis. The reality is that for the year to end up as not the total disaster it has been but in fact improve, “Inside Out 2” can’t be an exception.
Why? Because a combination of the shortfall so far, historical precedent, and a still somewhat (but less so) depleted release schedule all suggests there’s a limit to short-term improvement.
Odds are against 2024 recovering to the extent that...

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg and his production company Amblin Entertainment are behind some of the most popular family movies of all time. One of the more underrated offerings from the acclaimed filmmaker’s production house is the 1995 supernatural comedy film Casper, starring Bill Pullman as Dr. James Harvey.

The film follows Harvey, a widower, and a ghost therapist as his daughter befriends the titular ghost. It is known for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery, more notably being the first film to have a full CG main lead. During an interview, Pullman reflected on what the film’s ambitious CGI meant for him, recalling an incident where Spielberg warned him of the consequences of messing up a scene.

During an interview, Pullman reflected on what the film’s ambitious CGI meant for him, recalling an incident where Spielberg warned him of the consequences of messing up a scene.

Brent Spiner is best known for his work as Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation, a character that his fans are convinced is the most iconic one in his career. However, speaking with Esquire, Spiner revealed that that might not be the case after all, as there are fans who know him as a different character, who have never even heard of Data.

The actor has a pretty storied career, appearing in a slew of science fiction properties. Spiner has been an integral part of the Star Trek franchise, starring in quite a few iterations of the IP. Among all the natural disasters, the tsunami might just be the second most terrifying. While Norwegian scientists were anticipating that it might happen someday, the giant fjord’s collapse catches everyone off-guard — and now, a massive 280-feet wave is rapidly approaching the coast. People don’t have anywhere to run from it. Watch The Wave on Netflix and Prime Video.

Anyone who’s ever worked in an office knows what a mind-numbing, soul-sucking experience it can be. And if you haven’t worked in an office, you know someone who has because they’re probably intent on telling you what a depressing bummer it is, day in and day out.
We’ve seen plenty of movies take place in the corporate world, but few of them have ever touched upon the monotony of the experience quite like “Office Space,” Mike Judge’s incisive takedown of cubicles, office managers, and the drudgery of a Nine to Five in a soulless office building. In fact, one needn’t have worked in an office to relate to its characters who search for something meaningful in their boring jobs. Most everyone’s had a job that made them want to slam their head against the wall, and “Office Space” seems dedicated to those of...

You can’t blame Bill Pullman for feeling hesitant about taking on the lead role in Lifetime’s two-part limited series Murdaugh Murders: The Movie.
It’s not that the SAG-nominated actor was worried about going dark — he’d done so not long ago, and brilliantly, in USA’s The Sinner — he simply just wasn’t aware of the tragic story of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh, who was convicted in 2023 of murdering his wife and son.
“I didn’t know about him!” Pullman revealed during the THR Frontrunners Lifetime Showcase held June 6 at San Vicente Bungalows in Los Angeles. “Then I asked the people in my life about the case, and they said, ‘Oh, I hate that guy!’ I thought, ‘Ok this is a nonstarter.'”

With Bad Boys: Ride Or Die galvanising the summer box office, bagging $100 million in its opening weekend and riding high at a cool $215 million current total cume, Sony Pictures are set to cash in on the success of star Will Smith's big-screen comeback with a buzzy new project. According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning King Richard actor is set to lead Sony's Resistor, a sci-fi thriller based on Daniel Suarez' bestselling novel Influx.
Plot details for the film — whose script was first written by Zak Olkewicz (Bullet Train), then redrafted most recently by Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle) — are under wraps at the mo. That being said, if Resistor follows Suarez' book, then we can expect Will Smith to play physicist Jon Grady, whose team discover a device that can reflect gravity. However, what should be a revolutionary, future-changing triumph soon turns into a nightmare for Jon...

Over the weekend, "Inside Out 2" gave the box office a much-needed shot of life with a record-breaking $155 million opening domestically. Pixar's acclaimed sequel also posted the biggest opening ever for an animated film globally. That has, understandably, taken the lion's share of attention in the press. Not to be lost in the conversation though is the fact that "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" managed to hold surprisingly strong against Disney's animated juggernaut. In the process, it cemented Will Smith (once again) as one of Hollywood's biggest A-list movie stars.
While "Inside Out 2" was dominating the charts, "Ride or Die" managed to drop just 40% in its second weekend, adding another $33.7 million domestically. This comes after the fourth film in the "Bad Boys" franchise topped the charts the previous weekend with a $56.5 million haul. It also grossed just shy of $31 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its running global total to $214.6 million.

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the historical drama series ‘Those About To Die.’
Panem et Circenses – Bread and Entertainment; Rome in 79 A.D.: The centre of the Roman Empire is the wealthiest city in the world, and there is a heavy influx of slave labourers from the growing empire to take over the work. The Roman population—bored, restless, and increasingly violent—is kept in line mainly by two things: free food and spectacular entertainment, in the form of chariot racing and gladiator fights.
The series delves into the world of the games—a world characterized by bloodlust, greed for money, the pursuit of power, and corruption. The races at Circus Maximus are controlled by four Patrician-owned corporations, the Blue, Red, White, and Green factions, and shares in the four factions are the most valuable things in Rome. As the taste in entertainment of the populace becomes more jaded and bloodthirsty,...

Ancient Rome has long been fertile ground for big-screen epics, from Ben Hur to Gladiator.
But the age of togas and chariot races hasn't spawned many successful TV dramas.
So Peacock execs likely knew they were taking a bigger risk than Caesar crossing the Rubicon when they greenlit Those About to Die, a big-budget drama about the world of gladiatorial combat.
Now, the streamer has released the first full-length trailer ahead of the series' July 18 debut.
A press release issued today describes the show as coming from blockbuster director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) who serves as executive producer along with Academy Award-nominated writer and creator Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan).

Would The Matrix starring Will Smith as Neo and Val Kilmer as Morpheus still be as legendary? Fans will never get to live in this reality as the Wachowskis’ modern-day classic changed the sci-fi and action genres with Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne in those roles. The film was one of the highest-grossing films of the year and redefined the sci-fi genre.
Will Smith has turned down many roles in his career but the Bad Boys star reportedly regrets turning down Neo the most. He mentioned that he could not see the vision of the filmmakers as he had received an awful pitch from the Wachowskis. He mentioned that their terrible pitch for The Matrix involved a very crude explanation for the iconic ‘bullet time’ sequence.

The fourth installment of the action film franchise which made Smith a star reportedly had a great opening weekend of $104 million at the international box office. The film also starred Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, and Eric Dane in lead roles.
The film is Smith’s first release since 2022’s Emancipation, which was on the heels of the infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony and he even resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die’s box office performance implies that the slap was not as big of a career-ender.

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die couldn’t be a more apt title for Will Smith, for whom much is riding on the film doing decent business.
If it works, it could jump-start Smith’s movie career more than two years after he slapped Oscar host Chris Rock on live television, tarnishing a public image he’d spent decades cultivating.
In advance of Bad Boys 4 — in which he plays the sort of fun-loving role people enjoy seeing Smith in — The Hollywood Reporter has learned that his agents at CAA have been calling studio production execs for the first time since the slap. Over the past three or four weeks, they have inquired if studios have projects that are right for Smith, and have even thrown out a suggestion or two, according to multiple sources. The hope is that Smith’s next film can be announced relatively quickly, should Bad Boys 4 work.
