Beazley is an exciting and dynamic specialist insurer. We've grown to be a $5B FTSE100 company over the last 30 years - we want to double in revenue to $10B in the next 3-5 years. We are modernising our entire estate to make this happen in a large transformation programme. Data Science, Machine Learning and AI plays a core role in both our current and future state, and this is where you come in.
The remit of the data science team is to create value through the development, deployment and operation of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI solutions to address the needs of our growing and evolving business. This can range anywhere from using data science methods to help the business to turn data into understanding, through to the development of sophisticated AI systems, which incorporate cutting edge Generative AI models and techniques.
As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you will engage with business stakeholders to transform complex business issues into technical requirements. Your role will involve crafting and implementing strategies to address these needs, working in close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including specialists from underwriting, claims, operations, actuarial, data, networks, security and architecture. Your goal will be to support the business in making optional decisions, faster, at a high rate of quality AND accuracy. This will help us to enhance our processes, as well as to provide deeper business and market insights, any ultimately better serve our customers.,

  • Design, build and productionise Data Science, Machine Learning & AI solutions that enable business teams to improve quality and speed, whilst reducing operational risk.

  • Be the owner of your solutions. Actively participate in stakeholder meetings and regularly communicate results to the project team and the business.

  • Understand the characteristics and the limitations of the data you are using and how this data flows through Beazley systems and servers. Understand the risks when using data and the controls applied to the environments you are developing to minimise these risks. Be conscious of where bias could be introduced and use all the available tools to ensure your models are fair.

  • Stakeholder engagement:

  • + Proactively engage with other technical teams to ensure your work is adequately supported and is being developed in an efficient, secure and scalable manner, adhering to Beazley policies and vision.
    + Proactively engage with business stakeholders and/or the business analyst (a) during development to ensure the solution meets user requirements and, (b) after delivery to ensure the solution is creating the anticipated business value continues meeting user requirements and expectations.
  • Assess the feasibility (and value) of new projects and the expected effort, to support continuous prioritisation.

  • Focus on continuous improvement in the ways that we work, including adopting (and documenting) best practice, new learnings, and the solutions we develop.

  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in our field.

  • Mentor and help others develop Data Science skills within the team and across the organisation.

  • Carry out additional responsibilities as individually notified, either through your objectives or through the learning management system. These may include membership of any Beazley committees or working groups.

    Graduate or a postgraduate with a science, technology, engineering or mathematics background, or equivalent experience.


  • Skills and Abilities
  • Strong programming skills in Python for data science and AI.

  • Experience with one or more cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP) and their AI/ML services.

  • Version control using Git.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Strong communication skills. Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong team player.

  • Basic SQL knowledge, Practical/applied experience in AI/ML solutions development, deployment and operation in an enterprise environment.

  • Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms.

  • Experience with data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and MLOps principles.

  • Knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques.

  • Awareness or experience of applying Agile frameworks (such as Scrum or SaFE)

  • Understanding of ethical AI principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of Generative AI tools, techniques and principles would be advantageous.

  • Experience in the Insurance domain is not mandatory, but would be an advantage.
