Full Job Description

To manage / maintain and carryout all designated engineering activities to include Rail mounted gantry cranes and port plant equipment, ensuring that business requirements and operational availability of assets are fully maximised in cooperation with other Freightliner departments.
To adhere and fully comply with all relevant company safety standards, rules and regulations to ensure that yourself, those working with you, and the overall business is protected.
To carry out all duties in accordance with Freightliner Group safety management systems and requirements.
To carry out all tasks in an efficient and economic manner without prejudice to items 1.1, 1.2. and 1.3.
2.0 Principal Activities and Accountabilities
To be a self-motivated person capable of working on own initiative.
To organise and carry out the company's programme of engineering examinations, maintenance events, fault finding, diagnostic checking and repairs of company assets in accordance with company maintenance instructions and procedures.
Take the lead role in the absence of a Manager / Supervisor.
Lead and give guidance to others within the engineering workplace.
Ensure accurate and comprehensive recording of maintenance and defect / repair information and the parts used to ensure company records are completed and kept up to date in accordance with legislative requirements and company instructions.
Fully utilise available Freightliner IT systems relevant to the scope of your work.
Participate in personal progressive training to consolidate and expand on existing knowledge to ensure competencies are maintained, be willing to learn and use new skills, keep abreast of engineering technological developments and to achieve new competencies at work.
Attend training course as required, including away from home station.
Participate in the training and development of new recruits and apprentices.
Maintain effective communications with other staff groups including operations staff and contractors when carrying out maintenance or repair work likely to affect the safety of self or others.
Self-risk assess work prior to undertaking the tasks. Ensure good safety behaviour by both self and others. Don't cut corners and always follow the rules. If you are not trained then don't do it. Protect the safety of self, colleagues, visitors, contractors or any other person in the vicinity of the workplace with good communications and information about the task to be undertaken.
Ensure the safe keeping of own tools and those owned by the Company. Make regular checks to ensure tools are not damaged and that they are safe and available for work. Ensure that tools are not mistreated and that they are only used within their design recommendations and limitations.
Understand and act upon the legislative requirements of the environmental laws and participate as part of a team to ensure all hazard spills are reported and dealt with appropriately. Ensure that all waste is segregated and disposed of safely into the waste containers provided.
Ensure that all areas of the workplace are kept clean and tidy at all times.
Be prepared to work flexible working arrangements and, if asked by the manager and/or the supervisor, the Technician must be prepared to work on a temporary basis at other designated locations within a reasonable distance and time from home location to cover contingencies or emergencies.
Adhere and comply with all safety standards, rules or regulation of any location you may be working at.
Operate all Freightliner assets in accordance with company procedures and the scope of your work
Work flexibly within skill levels, training and competencies with no job restrictions and to give reasonable assistance with any task as directed.

3.1A suitable qualification gained from an electrical or mechanical apprenticeship or NVQ equivalent.
3.2Able to lead others and demonstrate a high level of underpinning knowledge of mechanical or electrical engineering systems to include proven Freightliner asset knowledge.
3.3Must be capable of providing a competent assessment of asset condition and be accountable for the actions required from the recorded findings.
3.4A sound working knowledge of company engineering instructions and procedures and be able to interpret these requirements and ensure all engineering tasks are carried out accordingly.
3.5A good understanding of the requirements of Health and Safety legislation and be capable of independently managing the health and safety of self and others in the workplace.
3.6Specific skills and knowledge required of the post: e.g. Gantry cranes as appropriate and / or container handling equipment, wagons and road equipment to include the appropriate electrical and mechanical training and / or experience in a heavy engineering environment.
