If so, we have an exciting new opportunity to join Devon Partnership NHS Trust as a Security Support Worker.

As a Security Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors across the Wonford House Hospital site.

The role is not only about ensuring a secure environment, it's also about embodying the core values of the trust - Compassion, respect, dignity and empathy., As a Security Support Worker for Devon Partnership NHS Trust, you will have several crucial responsibilities, ensuring a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.

These would typically include :

Maintaining safety - Regular patrols and surveillance will ensure the safety and security of the facilities across the inpatient site.

Incident Response - Responding to personal alarms / radio requests promptly, with the ability to manage violent and challenging behaviour from patients.

De-Escalation - Using verbal de-escalation as your primary tool to manage and diffuse potentially volatile situations safely.

MDT - Be part of a multi-disciplinary team and work closely with other healthcare staff to support the delivery of care, especially with high risk situations.

Record Keeping - Accurate accounts must be documented of incidents, observations or any planned tasks carried out.

Compliance - Ensuring you remain up to date with relevant training, adhering to legal and regulatory security standards., This role will involve being part of the security team, carrying out security tasks on and across the inpatient environment.

They are to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff and ensure the service meets the needs of all service users.

Daily tasks will include but are not limited to :

  • Supportstaff under the instruction of Nurse in charge / Ward manager / On call managerwhen in a clinical environment

  • Carryingout alarm checks

  • Assistwith room search / communal area searched on allocated wards

  • Assistwith patient personal searches on the wards or when returning from leave

  • Assistwards in admitting new patients ensure property is accurate and adhering topolicy

  • Actas escort / driver for any necessary appointments (Hospital / Transfer / Court etc.)

  • Respondingto the wards in case of emergency (and be part of a physical intervention team,as a last resort if all other forms of de-escalation are unsuccessful)

  • Carryout security and environmental audits

  • Completesite perimeter checks

  • Providekey inductions to new staff and visitors to the site and escorting whenrequired

  • Providetraining alongside Security Manager to staff - handcuff / softcuff, securityawareness and search training

  • Assistingin site wide security improvements

  • Assistingwards with key and radio distribution and maintaining the relevant records

  • Reviewand submit CCTV footage where appropriate, under direction from the SecurityManager, ensuring all records are maintained and policies adhered to

  • Liaisewith the security manager to formulate or review security documents with theASMS

  • Entriesinto Seclusion / ECA under instruction from Nurse in charge for food, fluids,medication or patient safety

  • Assistthe Home Treatment Team with potentially high risk service users

  • Beingresponsible for ensuring a safe environment for people, property, informationand reputation within services on the Wonford site

  • Carryingout perimeter checks across site, including wards reporting any securityconcerns or damage

  • Providesupport for all clinical teams across the Wonford site


  • Communication & Working Relationships
  • Tocommunicate effectively with people using services taking into account anycommunication difficulties they may have and responding appropriately.

  • Toform and maintain therapeutic relationships with individuals and otherprofessionals and agencies.

  • Tomaintain accurate and complete records consistent with legislation, policiesand procedures.

  • Tocommunicate in a professional manner that is consistent with relevantlegislation, policies and procedures.

  • Taking,recording and reporting telephone messages.

  • Providingand receiving routine information to assist in undertaking the role.

  • Participatein ward / team meetings and discussions.


  • Planning & Organisation
  • Tobe involved in day to day security tasks on the wards, secure areas and generalsite

  • Assessmentand implementation of security audits and reviews

  • Toprioritise tasks and manage the shift workload in discussion with the SecurityManager.

  • Inorder to provide comprehensive and quality services to individuals, the postholder will if necessary be required to work in other areas of the service asdirected by the Line Manager.


  • Responsibility for Patient / Client Care,Treatment & Therapy
  • Tobe fully aware of each individuals recovery care plan in relation to theirsecurity and safety.

  • Participationin the delivery of therapeutic interventions, under the guidance of the ward staff.

  • Participatein procedures involving intensive engagement and care of individuals who aredistressed and / or verbally or physically aggressive.

  • Beable to recognise signs of abuse and know procedures they need to follow toescalate their concerns.

  • Provideregular and practical support to individuals and their carers on safety andsecurity matters

  • Tomaintain the dignity and well-being of individuals and their carers at alltimes.

  • Escortingindividuals under direction of Nurse-in-Charge.

  • Participatingin ward / team Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and discussions as and whenrequired.

  • Asrequired keep accurate records of interventions provided as indentified inpatient care plans as directed by the Nurse-in-Charge and ensure all entries arevalidated on the electronic records system.

  • Promptlyreport any difficulties encountered whilst implementing agreed care plans tothe Nurse-in-Charge, and be able to report both verbally and in written formagainst progress of care plans.


  • Fitness to Practice and to Undertake JobRole
  • Thepost holder should ensure their fitness to undertake the post they should beable to demonstrate they are able to undertake the level of general trainingand personal safety training appropriate to their role and work area, and keepthis training up-to-date.

  • Ifthe ability to perform Physical Intervention Techniques or Prevention ofViolence, Management is a requirement of the role, the post holder must declarephysical fitness to undertake such a role.

  • Thepost holder should act quickly to protect the safety of individuals if theyhave reason to believe that they or a colleague may not be fit to undertake theduties within their job role.

  • Reportany observed incidence of unprofessional behaviour, accidents / incidents,untoward occurrences or faulty equipment to the Nurse-in-charge or LineManager.

  • Toparticipate professionally in service development and proposed service changes.

  • Totake part in any audit processes as required.

  • Complywith universal Infection Control precautions and procedures.

  • Assistin maintaining safety and security of the environment.

  • Helpingto maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the environment (including equipment).

  • Tohave knowledge and understanding of counter fraud.

  • Toensure Trust policies and legislation are followed regarding patient's propertyand monies.

  • Toensure accurate documentation and record keeping.

  • Toparticipate in the monitoring, ordering and receipts of stock and non-stocksupplies of the ward.

  • Toactively participate in regular supervision and an annual staff appraisal whichincludes service objectives and individual learning and development needs inaccordance with Trust policy.

  • Toparticipate in and support students learning along with other members of theteam.


  • Information Resources & AdministrativeDuties
  • Toeffectively use the Trust's IT systems (SystmOne), off duty (HealthRoster),learning and development (DEVELOP), online and any other IT systems eithercurrent or in the future as commensurate with the role.

  • If equivalent qualification is not already obtained, to complete Level 3 in NHS Security Training within 12 months of commencing employment at a reduced salary
