Full Job Description

  • To train in all aspects of welding and fabrication duties, working towards gaining a competency/skill-based apprenticeship

  • To undertake welding and fabricating duties, as required, in accordance with the company's quality standards and best engineering working practices

  • To undertake activities in a timely and efficient manner to maintain company contractual delivery requirements

  • To assist, where required, in peripheral activities, e.g. testing, assembly, packing, etc.

  • To undertake activities with the management, H&S and environmental systems


  • Staff relationship:
  • Directly responsible to the Operations Manager

  • Functionally responsible to the Fabrication Shop Supervisor

  • To liaise with all other departments, as appropriate, i.e., BFE Quality, Engineering, Sales, Fabrication, etc.

  • To liaise with clients and inspectors, when required

  • To be proactively involved with internal and external quality audits

  • Liaises with assigned mentor for apprenticeship work and progress

  • Liaises with contacts at the appointed learning provider for apprenticeship work


  • Duties and responsibilities:

    Training towards:
  • Shall be fully committed to the achievement of company policies and objectives with special respect to quality and safety, in line with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements

  • Shall carry out duties in a safe, timely, economic and effective manner

  • Shall ensure the workshop is adequately equipped; with machinery and tools being well maintained (planned maintenance schedule) and safe to use

  • Shall carry out the preparation and use of semi-automatic MIG, MAG and flux cored arc welding equipment

  • Be competent to carry out work delegated, in line with quality and safety standards

  • Training towards being competent in the use of computer software packages to assist with engineering activities

  • Shall carry out manual welding techniques

  • Shall carry out the production of components from metal plate

  • Shall carry out thermal cutting and shaping techniques using thermal cutting equipment

  • Understand and be competent in using and interpreting engineering data and documentation

  • Responsible for good housekeeping and maintenance of working area

  • To make recommendations, where appropriate, for improvements to existing working practices

  • Make recommendations for investment, renewal and replacement of plant/equipment

  • Ensure consumables are maintained at an adequate level

  • To ensure safe working practices are always adhered to (this applies to internal/visiting personnel)

  • To demonstrate a flexible approach to duties, which may be required from time to time

  • To undertake reasonable instructions and tasks from senior personnel, commensurate with the nature of the job and in the best interest of the company

This role is based within the established RGR Fabricating & Welding Services Ltd department; therefore, a strong team player attitude is essential., Apprentices must be at least 16 years old

    Today we are a competitive Designer, Manufacturer and Supplier of Strainers, Filters, Separators, Coalescers & Flame Arresters, predominantly for the Oil & Gas Industry. We are experts in project design and project management, focused to achieve on-time delivery of strainer and filtration equipment to meet complex project specifications for materials, manufacture, NDE, documentation and Quality Control.


  • We have in house experts and software for 3D Modelling, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and can design and certify to ASME VIII Div. 1/PD 5500 pressure vessel codes with both fabricated and highly competitive cast designs.

    We have a manufacturing plant in Worcestershire (UK) including a pipework/vessel fabrication division and we also wholly own a competitive manufacturing plant based in Goa in India which provides fully machined and tested cast products sourced from high quality ISO approved foundries in India. Our Indian manufacturing division Barton Firtop India is well established having supplied world-wide projects via the UK Head Office over the last 20 years.

  • Hours of work

    Works hours enable flexi-time working, covering a 40-hour week. Flexible start and finish times are available with core hours which must be covered each day. Monday to Thursday covers an 8.5-hour shift with half an hour lunch break and Friday covers a 6-hour shift with no lunch break. You are also entitled to a paid break per day, further details will be given at interview stage. You will also attend college on a day release basis (to be advised/confirmed) to study Level 2 Engineering Operative, sponsored by Barton Firtop Engineering. On days when there is no college, e.g. half term and summer holidays, you will be expected to attend work.
