Driver arrested after leaving the scene of a fatal crash in Newton County, Mo.; highway patrol identifies pedestrian killed
NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. (KY3) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the driver of a truck who left the scene of a fatal crash Friday night has been arrested Saturday morning.
According to MSHP Troop D, the driver was arrested at a house in Carterville, Missouri in Jasper County. Troopers are on the scene collecting evidence.
The 35-year-old man from Racine, Missouri is being held in the Newton County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a fatality, DWI resulting in death, no valid license, no insurance, and careless and imprudent driving.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, around 7 p.m. Friday evening, the truck was driving west on Douglas Fir Road south of Joplin when it went off the road and hit 60-year-old Sheldonna Wood. The truck then drove off.
Wood died at the scene.
This marks MSHP Troop D’s 49th fatal crash of 2024.
