Jerry Remy (1952–2021), Boston Red Sox All-Star and commentator

by Linnea Crowther

Jerry Remy was an All-Star second baseman for the Boston Red Sox as well as a color commentator after his retirement.

Baseball career

Remy began his Major League Baseball career with the California Angels in 1975 before being traded to the Red Sox in 1977. He spent seven seasons playing for the Red Sox, selected for the All-Star Game in 1978. After his 1986 retirement from his playing career, Remy began working for the New England Sports Network (NESN) as a color commentator for Red Sox games. A fan favorite, he remained in that position for decades, only stepping away from it a few months before his death. Remy’s longtime association with the Red Sox gained him a spot in the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 2006. He also wrote a number of children’s books about Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster.

Remy on his second career in broadcasting

“To end up in this career was never the formula. Then I got the job. I was scared to death. I had no idea what I was doing. And for the first two years, I would pray for rainouts because I hated myself. I mean, I could not stand myself on the air. It was horrible. But thank goodness I stayed with it because it was one of the best things that I’ve ever done.” —from his 2017 speech while being inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame
