Leroy Jones (1950–2021), Chargers defensive end

by Linnea Crowther

Leroy Jones was a defensive end with the San Diego Chargers in the 1970s and ‘80s.

NFL career

After playing college football at Norfolk State University, Jones joined the CFL and played for the Edmonton Eskimos for two seasons. He became eligible for the NFL draft in 1975, and he was chosen in the second round by the Los Angeles Rams, who later traded him to the San Diego Chargers. Jones played for the Chargers until 1983, and he was a member of the team’s famed 1980 defensive line known as the “Bruise Brothers.” He went to the playoffs with the Chargers in the 1981 season, playing in the legendary “Epic in Miami” playoff game, called one of the greatest games in NFL history. Jones blocked a kick in that game, which helped lead to the Chargers’ overtime victory.
