From my point of view, it's not exactly about programming. The game industry involves more than just programming. Programming is the core of the game; of course, it's what gives life to it. But art, animation, 3D modeling, rigging, scripting, storytelling, cinematics, and more are all involved in the gaming industry. If you want to start in this industry, it would be great to choose one of these areas to specialize in and contribute to the game industry. You can choose different areas, but it's recommended that you specialize in one and start working your way up.

In my experience I found out that every project has a new challenge to offer for you to learn something new. Every time I get a new project to start, I always check what I can learn from it before I start. I can say I am specialized in gameplay programming but I'm not limited to it. If I always work in a single area, I think I will be stuck only in that area instead of working in different kinds of projects like PC, Vr, Mobile, etc. If I only work in one single area I'm not saying that it's bad but I'll be stuck only working on that area without exploring other parts of the world of video game programming.

While Building your portfolio, Don't be afraid to add all your works no matter how small it is. Always add your latest work but also add your best work. On the way you will be growing up in your experience and your projects will be getting better. In that point, sometimes you have to remove other projects to add even better ones. And most important keep it simple and short.
