What are the most important design elements for accessibility?

A key element in accessibility design is in creating spaces with flexibility. We need to future proof the space and consider caregivers in the scenario as well.

I believe layout/design of any space is basic thing that directly connects with the users. To ensure accessibility, the space and layout play integral role as they truly impact on whole design processes.

I think one should consider accessibility in the early stages of design. Universal access should be considered throughout the design process, not as an afterthought. This helps to ensure that accessibility features are integrated into the design, rather than added on as an after-the-fact solution. Provide ample space for manoeuvring. Make sure that doorways, aisles, and other spaces are wide enough for individuals using wheelchairs or mobility aids to pass through comfortably. Install easy to access technology. Consider installing technology that is accessible to individuals with disabilities, such as automated door openers, voice-activated elevators, and audio descriptions for visual displays.

Prior any design work we discuss the three key pillars of accessibility in interior design with our clients. The three pillars are : emotional, functional and technical. Each pillar must be accessible in itself but all must be considered together. With each client we discuss their personal use of the space and their preferences.

Every individual has more or less a distinct requirement or preference in terms of accessibility and comfort. We must keep in mind those distinctions and uniformly provide accessible design features like: Space, pathways, and corridors: Ramps, curb cuts, automatic doors, smooth thresholds, wheelchair-reserved areas indoors; provide and enforce designated accessible parking, large bathroom stalls etc. to create a seamless experience for all without making anyone feel excluded.

I've learned that color can have a huge impact on a work environment. If natural light is not available then flexible lighting options should be considered. So many people now suffer from light-affected migraines. Colors also change their aura depending on their reflection under fluorescent lighting versus incandescent lighting. Important to have a business work environment that feels clean and soothing. Maybe energetic colors for a more dynamic tech workspace where ideas are shared and wakefulness is key. Less furniture, decor and more color seems to be the driver for a younger generation.

In many renovation projects that I went to visit, I was faced with the problem of not placing the power switch correctly. Therefore, in my opinion, lighting is one of the basic points in accessibility in interior design. - The correct placement of the power switch in every space provides easy access and convenience in doing other things, especially at night. - The design of combined light is another effective point, that is, a space has both warm light and cold light and hidden light so that it can be used in any situation. - Using the right colors suitable for the space also makes the space brighter or darker and therefore more accessible

The introduction of technology to our home appliances is a wonderful direction when we consider aging in place and limiting functionality. The hurdle however will be educating the user on how to use the appliance so that their life can be easier. Psychologically that can be a huge hurdle for the older generations. Taking a moment to have the designer or better yet, a representative from the vendor come and work with the client until they are comfortable and confident in their own space.

One thing that I have always found helpful is to view the room from a chair. It changes the whole perspective if the client is in a wheelchair to what the space challenges are for that client. You have to design from your client’s perspective, not yours. This is not your home.

Pienso que un espacio de tipología casa habitación, debe ser totalmente personalizado para las personas que lo habitarán, no sólo en gustos, sino en funcionalidad y distribución de los espacios. Debemos poner al usuario final en el centro de nuestro diseño, sus gustos, pasiones, emociones, actividades, entorno social, entre otros factores para poder lograr un impacto positivo más allá de lo estético, en lo emocional y así poder ofrecer un refugio del mundo exterior en el que nos encontramos día a día, y del cual todos necesitamos descansar al final del día.

Most important feature needed to design any space, commercial or residential. In commercial design, we always consult with our clients , and often their employees ,to better understand their needs. Un ejemplo muy interesante que he visto son supermercados en España que una vez a la semana, en un horario determinado, reducen los niveles sonoros y lumínicos para favorecer la inclusión social y la participación activa de las personas con Trastorno del Espectro del Autismo (TEA) e hipersensibilidad sensorial en actividades del día a día. Una participación que en determinadas situaciones, o entornos, se ve dificultada a causa de factores como la sobrestimulación. En parte, debido a que un alto porcentaje de personas con TEA presenta alteraciones en el procesamiento de los estímulos sensoriales que pueden provocar incremento de los niveles de estrés y malestar intenso.
