You’re looking to 3D print something specific. How can you find the right materials for the job?

There is a wider variety of 3D printing materials available now a days compared to merely 5 years ago. In 3D printing, not just the feedstock, the printing process can also change your end part properties. So, it is important to ask, what material via what process to begin with. Some high level questions to narrow down : 1. Do you want/need isotropic properties, if yes, you can rule out extrusion based processes. 2. Do you need metal of a polymer would suffice? While there are ultra polymers, they are for special use cases. 3. What’s the temperature, chemical resistance needed at the end use? 4. Any special features needed? UV, FR, ESD, EMI, etc. 5. Check reputable company catalogs once you have answers for the above.

I believe FDM materials should not be the only consideration. Depending on what your part is for, visuals, functionality, part accuracy, you have a variety of options. With the right service provider, you can print most plastics, plastic composites, resin and even metal.

There are different 3d printing materials like liquid (resin) materials, powdered materials, composite, PLA, and so on. I have hands-on experience with resin-based materials, thermoplastic, and composite materials in d printing. The coolest amongst these is resin-based because of the print quality and process! Solid filament materials may or may not require post-processing depending on the type of machine you're using. Resins will require a two-stage post-processing. Comparatively time-consuming but worth the wait.

Photo-cured polymers can match most of the properties of thermoplastics. Larger LCD machines produce large quantities of parts, challenging traditional processes like injection molding. There are also alternatives to metal powder in laser-based systems. There are metal filaments for FFF systems and wire for welding-based systems. Wire is safer and less expensive than powder. You need to be careful with metal powders. You need to use a respirator when handling powder to prevent breathing in the airborne material. Choosing the material depends mainly on the application of the part/where it's going to be used. The second is cost and the third would be appearance. If I need a 3d printed hammer, I can't go with elastic material. I'll go with ABS. If it's just a casing for a prototype device and you want to see the inside, go with transparent material. Coming to cost, if I need a high-strength part for my prototype, I'd go with composite material rather than ABS even though ABS would be more cost efficient. O motivo disso é que diferentes parâmetros afetam outros chegando em um bom resultado final.

Dependendo da tecnologia utilizada, o armazenamento adequado muda. Para impressoras da categoria FDM/FFF o mais importante é manter o material longe de umidade e temperaturas elevadas. Idealmente o fornecedor do insumo informa em seu site as condições ideais para armazenamento, mas uma pesquisa geral sobre o material em questão vai apontar as práticas mais comuns para melhor aproveitamento do material.

Store the material in their original package until their first use. Never open a package is the filament will not be directly used in printer. Once the package is open, try use the whole filament I a few days. If you have to swap to another filament, store it in box or in place where the air humidity is as low as possible. The used material isn't just the factor that affects the mechanical properties of your final product. I believe setting is more effective; for instance, the infill density specifically infill pattern, wall counts or wall thickness, top and bottom layers and so on. For example, cubic pattern for infill will give you the highest value of strength.
