I've found the more that producers and directors can be involved in the initial strategy discussions / ideation stages the better rounded a production becomes. It can take realistic shape faster and also makes it possible to build out more holistic promotional activity around it. That's not to undermine the vital role strategic specialists have in making productions come to life - because their optimism and creative thinking really is needed to kickstart ambitions. Thinking beyond what's possible is often where the magic lies. Life becomes very dull if you only surround yourself with pragmatists and experienced producers.

I've been quoted on Billboard, Variety, Bloomberg, CNBC, CNNfn etc... I had my strategies. You could just hire a publicist. I mean. What says more about being a leader than OTHER PEOPLE and the PRESS saying you're a leader. Or you could just do what everyone else says. And look inferior to those of us with a press profile. Even if we suck worse than you. Too bad. Grow some balls. Hire publicist. Track record.

I got into video production as I feel it's the ultimate team sport. Every person involved brings their expertise and years of experience. To build a great team is to paraphrase Edwin Catmull, requires a great deal of candor and courage to receive that candor. Until you can create an environment like that you're only a good team not a great one.

Being human and working with other humans = eventual conflict. How you handle it is everything. Humility is a core characteristic of someone who is a peace maker. You need to be willing to be wrong, and/or understanding of others. I learned this over a long career and I have much more to learn and much more career to enjoy!

Aim to be understanding but with no bias. Separate the issue from the people. Try your best to deal and focus on the issue and not the people. Do your best to not attack individuals and to not take/make things personal.

If you're a great storyteller you will always be learning. James Cameron is famous for constantly learning and creating from those learnings. Be hungry for new knowledge and learning from new teachers.

When I started we shot with Mini DV tapes. HOT HMI lights, and no iPhones. Now I’ve done projects on phones, have LED fixtures the brightness of the sun and can shoot in 12k (if I want to use a black magic… no thanks🙂↔️) You have to be willing to learn and adapt. So much of this business is learning new ways to do the same job more efficiently.

I was burnt out as a Head of Production... Not because of the work, but because of the lack of self care. Always remember, there is not job that is worth your mental health. So take time to recharge, whatever that is for you. I don't think there is a magic bullet that will suite everyone, so find your outlet to de-stress and re-focus. The usual suggestions of meditation, exercise, taking breaks, I have tried them all, but ultimately, what works for me is going home to family. And switching off when I got home.

Do things that have nothing to do with video production. Go to the gym, go on a hike, fish, learn a new skill. When someone asks "how are you doing" and your answer involves work, you know you have a problem and so often video professionals wrap their identity to their work. Then eventually their emotional well being. You are not your work, and your work is not you. Enjoy work, and enjoy life. You're more than your success in video.

Stress management starts with a realistic production schedule. Everyone wants to be productive on set, but you also cannot plan a shot list with exact timing. Sometimes lighting takes longer than you think, or getting the right camera angle or lens choice. This is a creative field and cannot be programmed like a robot. If you have no wiggle room in the schedule there is no time to fix things or make things right and will really stress everyone out. It is terrible for morale if no one is happy with the footage being captured.

Don't think you can drink your stress away. No matter how much you need it (and you'll definitely need it) it only detracts from what you actually need. You've got to learn how to take a hit. You will be stressed, you will be in a fix, you WILL stumble. So engage in healthy breaks to get your head straight so you can come back quickly and resolve things. Reminding yourself of the eventual fruits of labor also helps!

Developing an Agile Team and honors the culture of the company. Having a ' refer back to' system helps in many instances, especially when conflict arises or slight disagreement occur.

You need to find a community. You can’t be a lone wolf in this business. You’re only as good as the folks around you. If you have aspirations to grow and continue to learn, you need people who have been doing it longer than you. Experience is a great resource. One day 10 years will go by and there will be the younger versions of you looking to break on to the scene. Find them, and be what you needed when you were them.

Let your people think, and execute the plank=jado project, monitor and support what is right, correct what you see could fail, and pay attention to what the customer feels, because in the end what matters is what the customer feels about how we treat their "child", their product!.

Choose your projects. Don't accept projects if you don't feel that they can challenge you and that you can push the envelope. Stay humble and strive to excellence.
