Avoid saying things like ‘you’d be a perfect fit’ – you don’t know that until you speak to them! Far better to say “there’s something that I think could be interesting to you”. And ensure your message states what’s in for them eg. progression opps, marketing support, current team performance etc. Can you tell a story of a recent successful hire. Not “we are looking for xyz….”

Lets get rid of these automated messages that we can all pretty much see straight through. Make your message specific to the person, be human, demonstrate your market knowledge and insights specific to them and be you!

The value is in your content and by showing you know the industry. Talk about your company, not just reposting a job without adding any value but really trying to offer more that everyone else is doing.

If you know the top talent in your market, then you already stand a better chance than those relying on adverts and cold outreach. There's no shortcut for this, you have to invest weeks and months getting to know the top players, their ambitions, their salary expectations etc and do it in an honest way where there's no immediate benefit for the candidate sacrificing ten minutes of their time to educate you. You then have to make this a part of your every day activities to maintain. The end result is a knowledge your competitors won't have, that you can leverage for maximum value to your clients, and the ability to engage seemingly hidden candidate pools.

Networking can be very powerful and if we couple this with referrals, its even more powerful. We all like to ask for personal referrals because it makes us feel more at ease knowing someone else has had a great service or experience. Passive candidate attraction is exactly the same.

Start by searching job boards as you would for active talent, you might find someone promising. References are great but the pool can be limited. Interactions on LinkedIn are two-way, mutual awareness helps align aspirations and expectations. Common connections help foster trust, and build positive relationships while meaningful contributions to their activities and posts will help to stay in touch!

It's ALL about building valuable, true, sincere and long-lasting relationships with candidates. This is why (entirely personal opinion) I try to use AI as little as possible: recruiting is human work, investigating multiple facets of both candidates and companies. relationships then play a critical role in building trust with both client companies and candidates.
