Un buen negociador sabe de antemano que batallas elige ganar y cuáles perder para llegar a un buen acuerdo que sea beneficioso para todas las partes en negociación y asegura con ello una buena relación de largo plazo, sea esta de cualquier índole. Para ello conoce profundamente a su cliente, planifica la negociación, establece prioridades a lograr, sabe escuchar con empatía durante la misma y hace fácil cerrar acuerdos con alternativas satisfactorias para las partes.

A negotiator’s most important role is to discover the ZOPA. The “Zone of Possible Agreement” is the bargaining range in which the parties can come to an agreement. Paradoxically, the ZOPA is defined by both parties’ *worst* possible deal outcomes, also called “reservation points.” However, the parties will most likely only reveal their respective “target points” publicly, meaning their *best* possible deal outcomes. Skilled negotiators use a combination of listening, probing, and brainstorming techniques to estimate the other side’s reservation point and assess the ZOPA. After you have discovered the ZOPA, you want to make sure that the final deal meets your interests. But making this second step before the first one is usually a mistake.

A common negotiation is the price of a sale. Your goal is to get the best price for your company. The less authority you have to negotiate the better you will do. Sales people often want to take a superior into a closing because they have authority to set the price. Don’t. Early in my career I was about to close a really big order. The last time my company got a big order from this customer we went in with everyone from the sales guy to the president of the company. We took the order at a very low margin. This time I went in myself. Knowing my goals the customer and I came to agree on a much higher margin. I asked for some privacy so I could call and get the deal approved. It was. You can negotiate a better price than you and your boss!

First gather the information about a person or party whom do you want to negotiate.Utilise the information during the discussion subtly to your favour. Mix of greed and fear ingrediant is equally desired to cook it well.Some call it win- win more sophistically also. Show the benefits other might get because of negotiated proposal. Give them an option which is out of thier mind and they may realise midway is good way. Stay calm and serene and maintain it throughout and ever.

I’m trained as a lawyer and have negotiated extensively in courtrooms and meeting rooms, over freedom, justice and commercial matters. Yet the best negotiation skills I’ve learnt are from my children - how do I negotiate kindly, fairly and with empathy with a party that is obviously weaker than me and I have an unfair advantage over? Almost any where and every where , avoid trying to win always it’s ok to let go a few. Focus on the larger picture and not just winning. It’s also ok to walk away from a few deals but do evaluate your alternatives or potential demand/ takers or ability to create a better one if you decide to walk away.
