It takes a long time. We used to sit in the lobby of the Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) conference hoping to meet LPs (could not afford entrance fee to the main conference). After a decade of dominance by China based VCs, Korea VC ecosystem gets recognition with the emergence of powerhouses such as Coupang, KRAFTON Inc., (주)우아한형제들 (Woowa Bros.) Viva Republica (Toss), Toss Bank(토스뱅크), etc.

We’ve written blog posts about the types of founders we hope to partner with over time. This passage describes the people Altos Ventures has referred to as hedgehogs for nearly two decades.

Sharing a passage from the book Small Giants by Bo Burlingham (which I read long ago and re-read last year). It describes the types of entrepreneurs we look to partner with and the types of companies they want to build. Some may dismiss these companies as lifestyle businesses. But a few of our small giants have turned into real giants. Regardless of the ROI, it describes what I aspire towards as I approach my 4th decade as a VC. “There are some people who want more out of business than the typical company offers. It’s too boring for them. It’s too limited. It’s not worth the sacrifice. They have the passion, or perhaps just a burning idea, and they don’t want to let their life slip away without ever getting around to it. So they build companies that allow them to pursue their passion and follow their bliss, and they don’t forget why they went into business in the first place and how they got to where they are. They make sure that, as it grows, the business continues to be a mechanism for doing what they’re passionate about and for contributing something great and unique to the world. If done well, businesses are the building blocks, not just of an economy but of a whole way of life. What they do and how they do it have an impact that extends far beyond the economic sphere. They shape communities we live in and the values we live by and the quality of the lives we lead. If businesses don’t hold themselves to a high standard, the entire society suffers.”
