    Board Certified Behavior Analyst

I want to share something I’ve been working on since deciding to stay home with my amazing new baby boy. My company—BC Supervision Services—is now offering remote supervision to individuals looking to become board certified. I want to help any supervisees, especially those who are feeling overwhelmed or confused. I know firsthand how stressful the process can be. In 2020 I had been an RBT for two years and did not have any accrued hours. My wedding was August 2020 and then I was moving back to Kansas with my husband. To get hours at my company I either had to commit for years or pay an expensive penalty to leave early. All I could do was wait until after August 2020 to start accruing hours. That left only 14 months before the change to new standards which would have required an additional 500 hours. Remote supervision enabled me to submit my application in December 2021. My quality supervisor helped me develop a strong familiarity with the task list. More importantly, she helped add to the toolbox I used with clients every day. After passing the exam confidently on my first attempt I was able to begin work as a BCBA. Everyone should feel confident accruing their hours and walking into the exam. Unanswered questions cause stress and that stress can affect you day in and day out. Everyone should also be sure they are accruing hours that will best prepare them for the work of a BCBA. There is nothing more rewarding than watching evidence-based practices transform a client’s life—and the lives of their families. If you feel uncertain, then I want to change that. I want to help you clearly understand the process from today until you sit down to take the exam so you can focus on what matters. Feel free to follow me on my entrepreneurial adventures to learn more. Or you can check out the company page here - https://lnkd.in/gJsnQSGy. We have places to discuss key topics but would be happy to hear your thoughts if you don’t see something covered. #aba #BACB #fieldworkhours #behavioranalysis #remotesupervision

  • A large part of a BCBA’s job is training new technicians. One of my biggest realizations in grad school was that you could become the greatest program writer in existence, but if your technicians can’t implement the program with fidelity and collect data with accuracy then the great program means nothing! Given this, training technicians is not something that is often taught enough to aspiring BCBAs. After becoming BCBAs they are hesitant in their ability to effectively train because it is not something that was modeled, explained or practiced enough.  Starting out as a new BCBA without a strong ability to train is being set up for failure. Program progress may not be achieved fast enough, and it could simply be a training problem. You should not have to learn how to train on the spot when there are easy tools you can learn to use from day one while accruing hours.   Immediate and DIRECT feedback is something that most techs will tell you they want more of! So why are so many BCBAs hesitant to give it? Because it’s awkward? As BCBAs, we cannot let our discomfort hold us back from being good managers! It is our obligation to do our best for our clients and holding back on feedback because it is awkward holds our techs back, which in turn hurts our clients.  There is a way to professionally and respectfully give constructive feedback where it is intended for good for everyone. Set a precedent early on that constructive feedback will be given. Constructive feedback goes BOTH ways—ask your technicians to give you constructive feedback! We are in a field of growth after all and if it becomes second nature for everyone to give and receive constructive feedback it should take any awkwardness out of it   Ask your technicians how they respond best to constructive feedback and give them feedback in THAT way!  Training topics! I cannot speak to this enough. The more our technicians are taught to understand the principles behind the programs they implement, the more we equip them to critically think during a session and make appropriate decisions in the moment. Because we all know that sessions rarely go according to plan. But wait, there’s more! Equipping our technicians with knowledge also helps with buy-in and helps them feel like a part of the client's progress. Ask your technicians what they would like to learn more about and teach them!  What would you add? What have you seen the best results in when training technicians?  #aba #remotesupervision #bacb #behavioranalysis #fieldworkhours

  • Is behavior skills training (BST) your go-to when teaching new procedures? There is a reason why so much evidence-based research supports the effectiveness of BST when teaching new skills to individuals. Using BST should become second nature.  BST is one of the best tools any BCBA can have in their toolbox. Especially in a field where the turnover rate can be high for RBTs. How much more confident would you have felt as a new technician if someone had taken their time to implement BST for all of the new procedures and programs that you had never run before? Instilling confidence in our technicians is something that is important in a field that can at times feel overwhelming. Training technicians can be one of the most difficult parts of a BCBA’s job. You are trying to write new programs, analyze the data of current programs, modify programming, think of new creative ways to improve sessions for your clients AND ensure that every program is being implemented how you intended it to be. But what if the programs are not being implemented correctly? What if you have given the same feedback over and over and not much has changed? Implement BST! Just like our clients, we all have different ways of learning. Watching a program be implemented while having it explained and receiving constructive feedback in the moment may be just what your technician needs to help the program or procedure click.   In what areas has BST helped you the most? Do you think BST should be used more in the field? #ABA #behavioranalysis #bacb #fieldworkhours #remotesupervision

Why do so many BCBAs dread parent trainings? They are instrumental to effective services. It is essential that caregivers are trained on the principles of behavior analysis, especially in relation to the client's programming.    Parent trainings are an amazing opportunity to empower caregivers with the tools of behavior analysis that they can use even after the client is out of our care. I mean, isn't that the goal? For caregivers to feel confident when assisting their children in the natural environment.    Many BCBAs may not be appropriately trained in how to conduct parent trainings before they become BCBAs so the trainings can seem overwhelming.    As behavior analysts, it is our job to be able to disseminate knowledge of the field. Let's change the narrative. Get excited about parent trainings and the opportunities that they present for the betterment of the client. If you get excited for them imagine what it would do for caregiver buy-in!  #ABA #behavioranalysis #bacb #fieldworkhours #remotesupervision
