Accelerating the world’s transition to a circular economy, by developing next-gen alternatives to fibers and plastics.

About us

Bloom Labs is pioneering breakthrough in material science by harnessing the value of natural waste by-products, a protein-rich and globally abundant raw material, to create high-performance alternatives to textile and plastic materials. Our mission is to make circularity an actuality. We see a future where old resource-intensive processes are replaced with cutting-edge next-gen alternatives. Using bio-manufacturing, advanced protein engineering, and molecular biology, our proprietary technology plasticizes waste, regenerating it into uniquely practical and versatile pellets. The pellets are spun into high-performance fibers, designed to emulate the properties of current market-leading materials – as plush as cotton, as lush as silk, and as functional as polyester. These materials are scalable and commercially viable yet avoid the use of harmful petrochemicals and resource-intensive processes. Our expert team of interdisciplinary scientists is reimagining material sourcing for multiple sectors and developing commercially feasible alternatives which will create a future of seamless integration, infinite feedstock, and limitless possibilities. Did you know two-thirds of global fiber production are now synthetic fabrics? Polyester alone has been the most widely produced fiber since the mid-1990s. The problem is these fabrics are fossil fuel-based, shed microplastics, and will never biodegrade. Petrochemical-based fiber production requires 1.3 billion barrels of oil each year – more than Spain’s annual oil consumption. At Bloom Labs, we’re working to bring together powerful innovation with cutting-edge science, pioneering breakthroughs in material science by harnessing the value of natural waste by-products, a protein-rich and globally abundant raw material. What’s the environmental impact of your wardrobe? 🌎 Whether your clothing is made from natural or synthetic fibers, your items have a footprint both socially and environmentally. As July arrives, so does the annual campaign – Plastic Free July, an initiative encouraging us all to be part of the solution to plastic pollution. But what elements of your wardrobe contribute to plastic pollution... What is your clothing made from? If made from synthetic fibers, each time it’s washed fibers will be released into wastewater. These fibers are called microplastics, or microfibers. They are so small, they can bypass filtration processes and make their way into our rivers and seas causing environmental damage. What can you do? Try and wash your items less – or opt to use a microplastic filter, like The Cora Ball or GUPPYFRIEND . – #PlasticFreeJuly #SustainabilityEducation #Sustainability #Microplastics #Fibres #EnvironmentalImpact

🌎 At Bloom Labs, we’re marking #EarthWeek by redoubling our commitment to moving the #fashionindustry into a clean future in the #circulareconomy. ♻️ The original #EarthDay, April 22, 1970, saw the participation of millions of Americans, including students, teachers, politicians, civil society, and citizens from all walks of life, come together to raise awareness about protecting our world, an effort that sparked a renewed environmental movement and important policy change. 🏛 This work continues today and we’re proud to be a part of a legacy of action. #Circularity and sustainable #materials will continue to be a critical part of reducing our dependance on harmful fossil fuels and reducing #pollution and #overconsumption. Bloom Labs is determined to deliver on our mission to power the world’s green transition. This Earth Week, we encourage everyone to reflect on the importance of a clean, healthy environment and take some action to help the Earth. 🌍 💚 Change is not easy. A real change is not fast. But, together, change is inevitable. Happy Earth Week! 🌏 #BloomLabs

It’s #FunFactFriday! 💡 Here are some fascinating tidbits about the wondrous material #silk 🧵 🔥 Silk and Fire Resistance Did you know that #silk has a natural resistance to fire? 🔥 Silk #fibers are made of the #protein #fibroin covered in a stick substance called #sericin. Fibroin contains amino acids with polar side chains that contribute to its stability and resistance to heat. Silk also has a unique molecular structure with strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds and crystalline 💎 regions that make silk less prone to combustion when exposed to flames. ⚠️ Note, however, that silk is not completely #fireproof, although its fire resistance is relatively high compared to other natural fibers! Therefore silk is sometimes used in protective #textiles, such as firefighter gear, curtains, and upholstery #fabrics. 👨🏾🚒 🧠 Now, go forth and regale your friends with your new silky insights! Have a great weekend. 😄
