CASA of San Luis Obispo County advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children within the court system

About us

ABOUT CASA of San Luis Obispo County CASA of San Luis Obispo County (SLO CASA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of abused and neglected children. For nearly 30 years, we have recruited, trained, and supported volunteers, known as Court Appointed Special Advocates, who assist children assigned to our organization by the courts. CASA volunteers work throughout the county, with foster children between the ages of newborn and 21. They provide advocacy in the courts and bring stability to their assigned children, helping to ensure that the needs of each child are met. SLO CASA carries out its work with an annual budget of $1.3 million. It is led by a 13-member Board of Directors and has a dedicated staff of 14. SLO CASA’s more than 200 volunteers form the backbone of the organization, through their tireless direct work with children in the foster care system. SLO CASA is part of a statewide and national network of similar organizations. You can learn more about us at https://slocasa.org/

Let’s make a difference for foster youth this back-to-school season. Help us give back to kids in foster care by donating today to our Back-to-School Drive! For many children, the beginning of a new school year is joyful as they anticipate seeing old friends and getting to know new teachers, but it can be difficult for kids in the child welfare system. Children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect and have been removed from their homes are entering this school year with high levels of stress and uncertainty. Learning loss as a lingering effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple school changes, and the loss of family members can all compound the stress of going back to school. Back-to-school shopping is a cherished tradition for most children. For youth in foster care, the majority of their clothing comes second-hand from older kids and thrift stores. A crucial boost in self-esteem and a feeling of normalcy during a difficult time in their lives is provided by having the opportunity to purchase new clothes and choose their own school supplies. By contributing to our Back-to-School drive, you can assist local foster youth have fun and smooth the transition back to school. Your contribution will go directly to a gift card to a local store where kids can shop with their CASAs to choose their own backpack or a new outfit. • We're seeking support for increasing funds for the Victims of Crime Act. The Crime Victims Fund was established by the VOCA of 1984 and is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime. The Fund is financed by the collection of federal crime fines, forfeitures, and special assessments rather than taxpayer dollars. The Fund helps an average of 3.7 million victims of all types of crime every year. Over the past years, the fund has been cut, and we, along with CASAs across the state and country, advocate for an increase in funding to better support the foster youth and children that are under our care.
