CASA of Tarrant County and its court-appointed volunteers advocate for the best interest of abused & neglected children
About us
CASA of Tarrant County and its court-appointed volunteers advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children. From helping siblings find permanent placement together, to finding a child a stable home with a relative, to uncovering positive information that helps a loving family reunite, to something as simple but yet important to that child as ensuring that their shoes are not too tight for their feet, volunteer Advocates make incredible differences in the lives of children. • You’ll talk with the child and with their family members, teachers and others to find out where the child will be happiest and safest: with the parents or another relative, with a loving foster family or through adoption. • You’ll speak for the child in court, making your fact-based recommendation for placement to the judge. • During the life of the case, you’ll act as the one constant in the child’s life as they experience changes in foster placements, schools and caseworkers. You’ll ensure the child's needs are met and the case is resolved swiftly and appropriately.

Via UT Physicians: Child abuse is a public health problem, with 1 in 7 children suffering from some form of abuse, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unfortunately, those numbers may be even higher. “Child abuse is definitely underreported,” said Michelle T. Ruda, MD, child abuse pediatrician with the UT Physicians CARE Clinic – Texas Medical Center and assistant professor of pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. “This is why it’s everyone’s job to help prevent child abuse.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/g6bkUFih

This month, we're highlighting Collaborative Family Engagement (CFE), a key part of our advocacy for children. Lifelong meaningful connections are crucial for positive outcomes, and many foster children have lost these ties. CASA employs CFE to create a team between volunteers and Child Protective Services, identifying and involving family members and other committed adults in the child’s care and planning, aiming for quicker permanency. Matthew Lopez emphasizes that CFE helps uncover caring adults to form a stable support network. Success stories include advocate Amy, who reconnected a child with paternal family members, and volunteers Kimberly and Staci, who used CFE tools to engage children and uncover important personal insights. >> https://lnkd.in/gEy6bGUU

Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July and is an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences and struggles of the disability community. Even though this month comes with many joyous celebrations, we cannot negate the unfortunate reality that both children with disabilities and children of parents with disabilities are overrepresented in the child welfare system.
