On the type of temperate early June day that brings dozens of joggers and cyclists to the Charles River, a group of cancer survivors was chatting by the MIT Boathouse as they worked through warmup exercises. Once they had limbered up, they donned life vests, grabbed paddles, and filed onto a dock before stepping one by one into a so-called dragon boat, a long, canoe-shaped, watercraft originating from China's southern Guangdong Province. Known as the Wellness Warriors, this group meets three times a week to paddle together. It’s excellent exercise, but for the Wellness Warriors the dragon boat offers more – a community where survivors feel understood.

People aren't the only ones who get stressed out. Our cells do, too. Particularly cancer cells, which are wired to proliferate quickly. But DNA replication, a critical part of cellular growth, is a highly choreographed molecular dance. It involves six known methods for fixing mistakes that can arise in the genetic code. In addition, there are multiple checkpoints when the cellular machinery pauses to ensure that DNA replication is unfolding in an orderly way. But this rapid replication can disturb the well-choreographed process, causing stress. Researchers are looking to exploit this vulnerability as a treatment strategy for some cancers. Congratulations and THANK YOU to the Pan-Mass Challenge, an incredible organization that has raised more than $1 billion for Dana-Farber since 1980.
Today, the Pan-Mass Challenge surpassed $28 million raised so far this year, bringing our fundraising total since 1980 to $1 billion for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. PMC Founder and Executive Director, Billy Starr, wrote a letter to the PMC community to congratulate everyone who has been part of this extraordinary achievement. Now that the PMC has raised $1 billion, Billy wrote that "it is on to the second billion to be accentuated by a record goal and gift (I hope) of $75 million for 2024." Congratulations to Debolina Ganguly, PhD, recipient of an Early Career Researcher Award from the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.
PICI is thrilled to announce our 2024 class of Early Career Researcher awardees. Each of these bright and bold investigators is propelling the field of cancer #immunotherapy through their pioneering research, sharing in PICI’s mission to accelerate the development of breakthrough immune therapies to turn all cancers into curable diseases. This year’s awards total over $1 million and grant awardees membership into the PICI Network, a group of internationally renowned IO leaders. This support is designed to empower recipients to advance their critical work on gene networks, synthetic receptors, metastatic stem cells and engineered immune cells. - Parker Bridge Fellow Zachary Steinhart, PhD, Gladstone Institutes: Zachary’s research focuses on the interrogation of gene networks controlling human cytotoxic T cell function with next-generation CRISPR screens. - Parker Scholar Maxwell Foisey, PhD candidate, the University of California, San Francisco: Maxwell’s research focuses on how novel hybrid synthetic receptors deliver immunomodulatory payloads, enhancing solid tumor T-cell therapy. - Parker Scholar Debolina Ganguly, PhD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: Debolina is working to identify the mechanistic underpinnings by which metastatic stem cells promote systemic tolerance to tumor antigens and suppress responses to immunotherapy. - Parker Scholar Sean Yamada-Hunter, PhD, Stanford University School of Medicine: Sean is studying harnessing engineered CD47 to develop T cell and macrophage combination immunotherapy for rapid clinical translation. Congratulations to the 2024 awardees! PICI is honored to support your research and looks forward to the future innovations that will emerge from your work. With a legacy of awarding over $22.5 million through 53 total awards since 2016, PICI is proud to help cultivate a new generation of immuno-oncology leaders. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux, usually isn’t harmful. However, frequent GERD can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, where the esophagus lining changes to resist stomach acid. While most with GERD or Barrett’s esophagus don’t develop esophageal cancer, Barrett’s esophagus can increase your risk. Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6044YCVeG

Scientists from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Weill Cornell Medicine have developed and tested new #artificialIntelligence (AI) tools tailored to digital pathology — a relatively new field that uses high-resolution digital images that are created from tissue samples to diagnose diseases and inform treatment decisions. Their paper, published in The Lancet Digital Health on July 9, demonstrates that ChatGPT, an AI language model developed to understand and generate text, can be tailored using an artificial intelligence technique called retrieval-augmented generation, to provide accurate responses to questions about digital pathology and compile detailed results.
