We hope everyone enjoyed a fun and relaxing Independence Day. Ours was a lot more stressful at the start than we anticipated, but turned out well in the end. At the recommendation of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Washington Aqueduct, which supplies our drinking water, we issued a precautionary boil water advisory on July 3 for the entire city. Algae blooms on the Potomac River led to an increase in turbidity (cloudiness) which led to water supply concerns for the 4th of July holiday. Fortunately, water levels quickly returned to normal, water quality standards were never compromised, and the advisory was lifted. Here is a more detailed explanation of what happened from officials at the Aqueduct. https://lnkd.in/entdwPwf

If you are wondering if an internship at DC Water will test your comfort zone, the answer is yes. Call it team bonding, or team terror, or just tradition, but this year's cohort of summer interns found themselves in all sort of precarious situations Friday. The annual adventure park visit is just one of the ways we enhance their experience and give them opportunities to get to know each other - and maybe themselves - a little better.

You just never know what might generate a lot of attention. Last week it was a pretty straightforward announcement that we were doing some dye testing in Rock Creek Park to confirm how storm pipes connect along Piney Branch. The bright green color of the non-toxic, biodegradable dye caught many an eye, and prompted quite a few humorous takes. All the better because it helped us spread the word through social media and news reports, and perhaps prevented widespread panic, or at least localized concern from someone hiking past. The testing is in advance of our Piney Branch Tunnel Project to capture combined sewer overflows and improve the water quality of Piney Branch and Rock Creek. We are honored to win a 2024 goDCgo Transportation All-Star Award from the people who would know! goDCgo is an initiative of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) that encourages the adoption of sustainable transportation practices. DC Water was nominated for recognition in the Commuter Benefits Champion category, by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The award specifically recognizes our People and Talent team for offering a commuter subsidy option as a benefit for DC Water employees. Just one of the reasons the Authority is a regional employer of choice!

Let the construction commence! Today we officially broke ground on the Potomac River Tunnel Project, the largest contract ever awarded by DC Water. The 18-foot diameter tunnel will run beneath the Georgetown waterfront and along the edge of the National Mall. The unique construction will require two tunnel boring machines, one to mine through soft ground and one to mine through rock. Once completed, the tunnel will reduce combined sewer overflows to the Potomac by 93 percent. Full details at https://lnkd.in/eDv7gwNU
