I interviewed 100 therapists and the results are in ✅ (below) RESULTS ⬇️ 🗓️ Caseloads: • Avg. community mental health weekly caseload: 40 (100-150 total per month) • Avg. private practice weekly caseload: 25 (40 total per month) • Ideal weekly caseload: 15-20 (30 total per month) 💰 Finances: • Avg. student loan debt: $86k • Lowest session fee: $50/hr • Highest session fee: $350/hr • Most common session fee: $150 • % that accept insurance: 24% • % that are happy with insurance 5.2% 💼 Operations: • Avg time spent on admin: 10 hours/week • Most time consuming admin: notes and billing • % that offer telehealth: 100% • % that offer only telehealth: 78.3% • % that say they have experienced burnout since graduating: 73.1% 📱 Marketing: • % that have a psychology today listing: 88% • % that are listed on two or more directories: 64% • % that have a side hustle: 40% • % that use social media to get clients: 21% • top referral sourcse: existing clients and therapist friends POPULAR ADVICE ⬇️ • Pick a niche that you enjoy, not just one you think you should be in • Find 1 to 2 other therapists at a similar stage as you and create a small group to share business tips and get support • Pick one marketing channel that you will enjoy doing and ignore the rest • You don't have to work evening hours if you don't want to • Raise your rates (you're worth it) • You get to choose who your clients are • Don't use stock photos on your site (get a good headshot and show your face before clients have to scroll) • Join one of the Compacts to see telehealth clients across state lines • Uphold your cancelation policy • Treat yourself like a business person IMPROVEMENTS FOR NEXT TIME ⬇️ • Bigger sample size (most therapists that opted-in were in private practice) • Narrower scope (try to go deep on core problems) • Collect demographics (this will help segment results) MY TAKEAWAYS ⬇️ Before writing anything else, I want to say THANK YOU!
