Earlier this week, we hosted our fifth Smaller Marks Carpentry Training, where newer carpenters and interested employees can learn from our more advanced crew members in a larger group format. Supporting our teams’ learning and growth while touching on many of Dovetail’s servant-leadership values, these trainings allow everyone to share work, experience, and knowledge in a way that elevates our craft and our craftspeople. Technical Director Paul Caton led the latest training, which was the first session in a series of stair-building workshops—this time focusing on utility stairs and stringers. The training was segmented into an overview and demonstration by Paul, a breakdown of calculating basic stair math, and hands-on skill-building time. Each group was given a different net rise that determined their calculating, cutting, and building with pre-set 10” treads. You can see a recap of the workshop on our blog, https://lnkd.in/gV8UX99G

Featured on Hospitality Design is Bombo, a new restaurant and bar by Chef Ethan Stowell located inside the Seattle Convention Center defined by both culinary richness and architectural craft: https://lnkd.in/gADwGtVF “Designed by Graham Baba Architects, the 4,200-square-foot restaurant features large bi-fold Douglas fir doors that open up to the center’s 9th Street plaza for an indoor-outdoor experience. Entering the restaurant from the plaza, guests can peek down into the Bar at Bombo, located a half floor below. Further inside, a woodstone pizza oven stands against Mexican handcrafted terracotta tiles, rusticated white subway tiles, and blackened steel. Beyond an open kitchen, natural white oak shelves and custom concrete aggregate countertops complement the wooden bar," writes Stephanie Chen for Hospitality Design. Happy Preservation Month! Historic preservation is some of our favorite work, and 1617 Boylston is a perfect example of why! It is an adaptive reuse of a 1921 auto mechanic and printing shop for three levels of creative office space. SSF teamed with Graham Baba Architects to restore this 14,900 SF historic building while preserving its original architecture and fixtures where possible. Along with a seismic retrofit, the renovation includes exposed timber framing, new braced frame elements, and opening up the ceiling to showcase the timber roof trusses. https://lnkd.in/gcX_5CDx 📸: LARA SWIMMER PHOTOGRAPHY & Renderings by Graham Baba Architects Architect: Graham Baba Architects Contractor: Dovetail General Contractors

May is #PreservationMonth! Throughout the month we will be spotlighting various transformations built and on the boards. First up is the Boylston Garage built in 1921 as part of Seattle’s ‘Auto Row’ along the Pike-Pine corridor. The Boylston Garage is an #adaptivereuse of a former automotive garage done with the purpose of excavating and restoring the building’s historic character, while selectively and tastefully upgrading it for a new phase of life. Much of the original construction of the brick and heavy timber structure survived behind decades of renovation and modification, providing the opportunity to rediscover and celebrate the existing character both inside and out, while adding the modern touches needed to provide an authentic but contemporary creative work space that sits beautifully in the fabric of the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood. The renovated building consists of nearly 15,000 sf of open office space across three levels. New storefront windows and entry doors set into the existing brick façade connect the ground level to Boylston Ave. At the upper level, the attic floor was removed to reveal 8-foot-tall timber trusses within an 18-foot-high space. Skylights, boarded up long ago to give way to low-maintenance artificial lighting, have been restored and additional skylights added, bathing this level in openness and natural light. We’re delighted to share a new GRAY Magazine (GRAY Media, LLC) feature of Brighton Beach Residence, a lakeside family home in Seattle. “It’s rare when you get to work on the shore here in Seattle,” design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, shares. “What I loved about this property from the beginning is that it is on a public path to the lake, and that presented a challenge. If you work on a property with challenges, it usually leads to a lot better house.” Visit the link below to read the full story! https://lnkd.in/gkfYTNDC Photos by Aaron Leitz #Architecture #Design #Seattle Rachel Gallaher Project Team: Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and Edward Lalonde, Design Principals; Christian Ruud, Dawn McConaghy and Daniel Temple, Architectural Staff; Laina Navarro, Interior Design; Francesca Dea Krisli, Interior Design Staff; Michelle Arab, ChiaLin Ma and Kelley Pagano, ASLA, PLA, Landscape Architecture.
