I'm happy to share insights from our recent publication, "Exploring the Impacts of E-commerce Activities on the Spatial Resilience of Warehouse Clubs: The Role of Retail Agglomeration," featured in the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. This study investigates the effects of retail agglomeration and e-commerce activities on consumer foot traffic at warehouse clubs. We observed a significant reduction in store visits, with both general merchandise (GM) and narrow-range merchandise (NM) e-commerce activities, with GM e-commerce presenting a greater challenge. Our analysis shows that warehouse clubs near diverse GM retail clusters, including supercenters and department stores, see an uptick in foot traffic. Additionally, proximity to NM clusters, particularly those close to grocery stores, enhances visitor numbers. The research also highlights the complex interactions between physical retail clusters and online e-commerce activities, emphasizing the importance of strategic location decisions to help warehouse clubs withstand the challenges of e-commerce competition. Special thanks to Earnest Analytics and Placer.ai for the crucial data. My thanks to Christopher Pomponi and Michael Maloof from Earnest Analytics for their trust. Gratitude to Chee Yew Wong and Andrea S. Patrucco for their kind support, and to my collaborators Guang Li, Martin Dresner, and Benny Mantin for their deep insights. For industry leaders like Costco Wholesale, Sam's Club, and BJ's Wholesale Club, the strategic importance of location decisions is more crucial than ever.
