Financial support for families facing cancer

About us

Treatment requires more than medicine — families need a roof over their heads and food on their tables to survive. If a family can’t meet these basic needs, cancer treatment takes a back seat. Family Reach is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works with patients, providers, and community organizations to challenge the systems that force families to choose between their health and their home. Together, we’re making financial treatment a standard of cancer care.

At Family Reach, "meeting patients where they are" is more than just a phrase. One of the ways we're actively reaching people in need is through our on-site support program. Alima Lester, our On-Site Resource Navigator, works at treatment centers in Philadelphia, where there are some of the highest rates of cancer diagnoses and poverty in the country. ➡️ Swipe for an example of this work in action.

"Cancer isn't just emotionally and physically taxing: It can take a steep financial toll on patients, caregivers, and families," reports TIME. ➡️ Wiping out bank accounts, struggling to afford groceries, and losing safe housing shouldn't be side effects of cancer, but they are. Financial interventions level the playing field so that every patient can meet their basic needs and maintain access to life-saving treatment. #financialtoxicity #cancersupport

Happy #Juneteenth! As we honor this day of freedom, resilience, and celebration, we're reflecting on pivotal moments in history while recognizing the ongoing journey toward #healthequity for the Black community. We know that Black families in America face some of the highest rates of financial stress during cancer treatment — and we know that has to change. Through partnering with Black-led community organizations and providing on-site support, we're committed to meeting Black patients where they are, listening to their stories, and advocating for the equitable care they deserve. 🫶🏿

As part of their ongoing commitment to The White House Cancer Moonshot, the HealthWell Foundation and Family Reach have joined forces to improve equitable access to innovative and potentially lifesaving treatments available through oncology clinical trials in the United States. We announced our sponsorship of Family Reach’s Clinical Trial Access Fund last month. The fund provides financial assistance for food, transportation, housing, and utilities to qualified oncology patients. Removing these barriers to care improves the likelihood of ongoing compliance with clinical protocols and a patient’s chance of survival. Families often tell us that feeling ashamed, afraid, and uncomfortable makes it difficult to share their financial concerns when going through cancer. For the LGBTQIA+ community, a history of discrimination can make asking for help even more daunting. During #PrideMonth and every month, Family Reach is committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment, where everyone feels safe to share their stories and seek the care they deserve. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

🔍 NEW DATA from an analysis of nearly 6,000 cancer survivors reveals that moderate to severe health-related social needs are prevalent among younger adults — and they're linked to increased mortality rates. This is why cancer treatment requires more than just medicine. Access to food, housing, and transportation is just as critical to positive treatment outcomes.
