🌟 Celebrate the one-year anniversary of the OECD - OCDE recommendations on Access to Justice! Over the past decade, progress towards #SDG 16.3, which aims for access to justice for all by 2030, has been too slow. Far too many people still lack the justice they deserve. However, there is hope. The OECD recommendations provide a comprehensive framework for a people-centred justice approach, making it more accessible and effective in increasing resolution rates. As the #HLPF2024 is in full swing, let's push for change and ensure justice for all.

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (#HLPF2024) is focusing on "Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient, and innovative solutions." This year's review of #SDG16 underscores a crucial component: justice. 🚨 Why justice matters for poverty reduction: Everyday justice issues, such as crime, family disputes, land conflicts, employment problems, and neighborhood disputes, profoundly affect individuals' well-being and livelihoods. These issues are particularly devastating for people living in poverty. 🔍 Consider this: A rural woman unable to resolve an inheritance dispute may lose her land and livelihood, trapping her in a cycle of poverty and vulnerability. Her journey to justice is often complex, expensive, and time-consuming, with no guaranteed outcomes. 📊 HiiL's #data highlights: - People living in poverty face more legal issues related to land, family, debt, and social welfare. - These individuals perceive these issues as highly impactful but often lack access to institutionalized legal information and advice. - They frequently experience worse justice outcomes, bearing more costs due to unresolved issues. 💡 The way forward? Accessible and effective justice systems: Improving access to justice systems and ensuring they provide fair solutions to everyday problems can significantly contribute to poverty reduction. Today, on World #MSMEday, we celebrate the vital role of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in achieving the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). MSMEs are the backbone of the global economy, driving employment, innovation, and growth 💪 At HiiL, we understand that justice providers face significant challenges, including a lack of innovation expertise, limited funding for transformation, and growing public demand for effective solutions. Our Justice Accelerator programme is the only initiative specifically targeting #MSMEs working on innovations to resolve justice problems. It supports tech, entrepreneurship, and innovation to improve access to justice. Willminds LLC, an alumni startup of our Justice Accelerator, exemplifies this mission. Amid Lebanon's justice challenges, Willminds delivers innovative, people-centred justice through mediation and arbitration. Their journey began during the 2020 pandemic, addressing the urgent need for functional justice solutions. Uganda’s Bataka Courts, which HiiL has been supporting since 2019, are changing community-based justice. These courts are run by respected elders and use local languages, resolving civil cases in just 72 hours. They are making a big difference in places like Kakadi and Kyegegwa, improving lives and strengthening community cohesion. Our Justice Accelerator and Business Resilience programmes have played an important role in making the Bataka Courts successful, keeping them accessible and efficient. With continued support, we can expand this innovative model even further, making positive changes in people’s lives and communities.
