Honoring Clyde Hooker Jr., a visionary leader who not only led Hooker Furniture into decades of exponential growth but also navigated the waves of globalization with decisiveness and innovation. His legacy? A flourishing company and a sturdy set of core values that still guide us today: cultivating relationships, modeling integrity, taking action, and embracing change. Clyde Hooker Jr. joined the family business in 1946, following graduation from Virginia Military Institute and serving four years in the U.S. Army including World War II. He was elected company president in 1960 and named chief executive officer in 1966. Under his leadership, Hooker Furniture grew into one of America's most successful furniture manufacturers, with sales increasing from $4 million in 1961 to $251 million in 2000. Following in his father’s footsteps, he also left a great legacy for our company. His 40-year journey was nothing short of extraordinary, turning difficult decisions into opportunities for growth and innovation. Profiles in Leadership: Bree Creel Bree Creel, Director of Sales Merchandising for Shenandoah Furniture, joined the Hooker Furnishings family 14 years ago. Over the course of her career, she has worked in many areas with responsibilities involving customer service, sales, product development, quality, and merchandising. Bree grew up in South Carolina and attended Winthrop University, receiving a degree in Interior Design. She started her career as a Merchandising Manager for Bernhardt Furniture and quickly moved to Director in the Upholstery Department where she worked for three years. She joined Shenandoah Furniture shortly after, where she has spent a majority of her career. When asked, what person in history, her life, or the industry inspired her to become a leader, she responded: “Many strong, caring women in my family have been influential throughout my lifetime. Both of my grandmothers were incredibly hard-working and resourceful, always persevering while remaining humble and loyal to their families and faith. Likewise, my mother encouraged my sisters and me to consistently give our best and find creative ways to problem solve, no matter the challenge. A leader and teacher at heart, she showed us how to be truly dedicated to a team while working for a common goal.”
