Early childcare educators and caregivers are critical to a strong economy and a full and productive workforce. Supporting the #childcare sector—providers, workers, and facilities—is a business imperative. I am grateful to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago team for listening to businesses and communities and highlighting the importance of the childcare sector. Special thanks to Fed Board Governor Michelle Bowman and Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee for their insights and thoughtful participation in the discussion. Joan Blough, Rob Grunewald, Suchi S., and many others who participated the other day—let’s continue to invest in the childcare economy, test innovative solutions, and build a better system to support early learning and childcare. Bevin Parker-Cerkez, Nicole Barcliff, and other colleagues at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and our community partners—gratitude for your leadership and tireless commitment to the childcare sector!

Founded in 1993, Partners In Housing Development Corporation (PIH) has been a lifeline for Indianapolis' most vulnerable residents. By providing affordable housing paired with crucial support services and intensive case management, PIH helps those who have faced chronic homelessness overcome significant barriers. Learn more about how LISC Indianapolis supported the organization with a #LISCLending loan. 👇🏾
Lending Spotlight: Partners in Housing LISC Indianapolis recently closed on a $586K loan to Partners in Housing to assist in the development of King Commons Apartments, a 32-unit permanent supportive housing development, along the MLK Corridor. The project will house persons exiting homelessness and will feature fully furnished one to four-bedroom units with on-site laundry facilities. Additionally, the first floor will house a dedicated common space, support services, and a food pantry. Residents will have access to on-site care managers from the Hamilton Center and resource coordinators and case managers through Partners in Housing. Construction is expected to start in summer of 2024. “Partners in Housing (PIH) is thankful to LISC for the loan to close this development project. We are excited about King Commons and look forward to opening in early 2025. We understood the need of the community, and specifically wanted three and four-bedroom unit types for families exiting homelessness. This is the latest example of PIH’s mission to ‘help people get housed and stay housed’ said Partners in Housing’s Interim Executive Director Monica Lunderman. https://lnkd.in/gC3vxfny

The Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA) catalyzes inclusive affordable housing in D.C., and access to capital is crucial to its success. That's why CDFIs like LISC DC, which has 42 years of success as a TOPA lender, help deliver patient financing to tenant purchasers. In a new Shelterforce op-ed, LISC’s Julia Duranti-Martínez and Ramon Jacobson discuss how TOPA paired with affordable capital helps D.C. residents by building tenant power, preventing displacement, and preserving high-quality affordable housing. https://lnkd.in/eyQJ_T7e

When Nelida Garcia was 9 years old, her father bought a farm in Mexico that had coffee plants growing on it. Her father said she and her siblings could sell any coffee beans they picked for pocket change. This early experience – combined with her family’s love of the beverage –inspired her dream of starting her own coffee business one day. She got the opportunity years later in San Diego, when Garcia met the staff at Access Inc., a business development organization supported by LISC and the #KrogerFoundation. Garcia worked with Access, Inc. to develop a business plan for Xula Mexican Coffeee, which caters and sells coffee, chocolates, and baked goods that embody Mexican culture and flavors. Since launching the business five years ago – starting at farmer's markets and then expanding to online sales – she’s returned to Access, Inc. to attend tax and accounting workshops, receive mentoring services, and secure grant support to pay for her catering permit. “Every time I need help with the business, Access, Inc. is there for me,” says Garcia. “My goal is to open a storefront for Xula Mexican Coffee, making it a home where people can feel comfortable and enjoy the products.”

Eddie Fallon’s goals were clear when he came to LISC partner Volunteers of America-Texas: he wanted to secure a stable job and save for a deposit on a new apartment. With support from Wells Fargo through LISC, VOA coaches connected Fallon to job training, plus interview and resume prep services, that helped him land a job as a forklift operator. VOA also worked with Fallon to create a budget and savings plan. Today, Fallon is living in a new apartment and driving a new car that provides reliable transportation to a new, better-paying job as a repair technician. “Having an apartment and a car [in] little less than a year of saving makes me even more determined to keep working hard and save more.” LISC Houston
