Driving through Wyoming yesterday, I was fortunate to come across a large-scale prescribed fire project. I stopped to chat with the Heli-Rappeller crew manager about how the burn was going and what he’s been seeing in the field the last few years. The takeaway was clear: if Congress doesn’t extend and increase the 2021 pay increase for wildland firefighters, “you won’t recognize this crew, my guys are going to leave.” With ever growing demands on the Forest Service to increase the pace and scale of treatments, we’ve got to figure out how to avoid a mass exodus and attract new talent. These guys are doing crucial work to protect our forests/communities and deserve better.
