In Asheville, North Carolina, a group of about five people found two bear cubs clinging to the branches of a tree bordering the fence of an apartment complex. Instead of leaving the cubs in peace, the humans decided to torment them for their own entertainment. The humans yanked the cubs out of the tree and posed for photos with them. Naturally, the young animals appeared to be terrified. Reports stated that one cub managed to break free—running away after biting one of the humans. The other cub was found by a North Carolina Wildlife Resources biologist in a retention pond and transported to a rehabilitation facility, where the animal will stay until fully grown. Treating animals like inanimate props and using them for human entertainment is selfish and dangerous—for them and for us—and deprives them of everything that’s natural and important to them. A photo op isn’t worth causing pain or stress to an animal. https://lnkd.in/d-gRhrVz #Animal #NotYourEntertainment #NotOurs2Use #LetThemBeFree #AnimalsArentProps #AnimalRights #freedomforall #advocacy #veganeducation

About us
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) entities have more than 9 million members and supporters globally, and PETA U.S. is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. PETA Foundation was founded in 1993 as an organization that helps PETA run, and includes departments like IT, Development, and Interactive Media. PETA and the PETA Foundation are two separate organizations but work very closely together. Looking for a career in animal rights? See our open positions here: http://www.peta.org/jobs.

Spaying and neutering are lifesavers, yet some people delay providing their animal companions with this essential care—or never have them sterilized at all—due to myths and misunderstandings. It’s time to clear those up. Preventing pregnancies tops the list of reasons to spay or neuter early. Animal shelters across the U.S. are overflowing with homeless animals, and “kitten season”—when warmer weather results in more breeding opportunities—exponentially worsens the companion animal overpopulation crisis. Rather than providing shelter, many facilities now turn away vulnerable animals, leaving them in the hands of neglectful people or on the streets, where they suffer and die in agony. Spaying and neutering stop this cycle of birth, homelessness, suffering and death. Spaying also eliminates female animals’ risk of suffering from diseases of the ovaries and uterus—including cancer—which are painful, expensive to treat and often fatal. Giving males “the snip” can protect their health by diminishing their risk of developing prostate cancer and eliminating any chance of testicular cancer. Animals who have been sterilized are also less likely to contract deadly diseases that spread via bodily fluids, including feline AIDS and feline leukemia. https://lnkd.in/eN7T_Ydq #StopAnimalHomelessness #SpayAndNeuter #adopt #protect #health #CompanionAnimals #animals #AnimalRights #AnimalJustice #lifesaver

How did PETA help pave the way for the investigation that led to the conviction of dozens of veterinarians, horse trainers, and drug distributors who were contributing to or directly involved in the abuse of horses? Not only was our exclusive footage of the tragic fatal injury of Lost in Limbo used in a segment featured on 60 Minutes, “the most successful broadcast in television history,” PETA also played a huge role in exposing the prevalence of drugging in horse racing, urged action for horses exploited for the “sport,” and was a key voice in demanding that Churchill Downs be shut down due to the many horse deaths there. https://lnkd.in/gREQZh_q #NotOurs2Use #CaptivityKills #NotYourEntertainment #HorseRacing #AnimalWelfare #AnimalAbuse #AnimalWelfare #HorseSafety

Seventy-five years ago, the recognition of animals—except perhaps the family dog—as individuals with thoughts and feelings was still in the future. Today, we know that animals of all species are complex, sentient beings who communicate in dialects (crows in the south of France can’t understand what crows in the north of the country are talking about), care for their families, have varied interests, have jaw-dropping navigational talents, are able to construct homes with their beaks or their claws, can figure things out and are emotional beings like us. We are bombarded with new insights: Recently there’s been news that orangutans, like many birds, seek out specific plants to use as medicine, crushing the leaves and creating a poultice to treat a wound. Crows devise elaborate tools to gather food. Dolphins use distinct whistles to call each other by name. Elephant families respectfully mourn their lost loved ones. Yet old mindsets are frustratingly slow to evolve. Many researchers today use state-of-the-art methodologies that can include organs-on-chips and fantastic high-speed computer simulators. People who still experiment on animals choose not to act on the continual flow of findings showing that animals can feel pain, fear and dread and wish for freedom from a laboratory cage. Some people still view animals as “others,” here to exploit in old ways, such as being force-fed to produce foie gras, shot to become a wall-mounted trophy or turned into trinkets for their amusement or pleasure. This supremacist conduct illustrates the belief that humans are more important than other species and can do as they wish with the rest. https://lnkd.in/e7ZUdKqq #animals #endspeciesism #activism #animaljustice #NotOurs2Use #NotAnExperiment #NotOurs2Wear #NotYourEntertainment #govegan #TimesAreChanging #freedomforall

The owners of Gator’s Grill & Spirits in Iowa keep a caiman named Allie on display in a cramped, barren tank inside the restaurant. Caimans are naturally shy and avoid loud noises and humans—keeping this animal in these conditions is inhumane and abhorrent. Help us urge the owners of Gator's Grill & Spirits to release Allie to an accredited sanctuary. https://lnkd.in/eVFvRpSj #EmptyTheTanks #CaptivityKills #LetThemBeFree #advocate #activism #endspeciesism #AnimalRights #FreedomForAll #NeverBeSilent #TakeAction

On a warm day, you might think it doesn’t feel too hot outside to take your canine companion for a midday walk, but if their tongue is out of their mouth and they’re breathing hard, they’re overheating and trying to cool down. Families expect thrills when they go to Cedar Point in Ohio, but they don’t expect to have to run for their lives—which is exactly what people did when two dangerous camels named Sampson and Artie escaped from the amusement park’s “petting zoo” and went galloping down the midway, threatening visitors. Just days later, Cedar Point made headlines again after a herd of goats got loose, became frightened, and ran through the park. If Cedar Point and its animal exhibitor continue to exploit animals, it’s only a matter of time before their incompetence will lead to injuries—or worse. Please politely urge the theme park to end its animal displays and stick to thrill rides and roller coasters! https://lnkd.in/eMSRn32N #CaptivityKills #BoycottTheZoo #LetThemBeFree #NotOurs2Use #TakeAction #AnimalRights #Advocate #NoExcuse4AnimalAbuse

After two South Carolina teens were seen in a social media video setting a young opossum on fire, residents across the state were stunned. The teens were charged with felony III mistreatment of animals. The footage was deemed too disturbing for news channels to air. The teens are shown chasing the likely terrified and confused little animal, whom they soak with lighter fluid, set on fire, kick, and stomp on. When young people torture and kill an animal and then gloat about it on social media, that’s a clear sign that swift intervention is needed. TeachKind—PETA’s humane education division—stands ready to assist South Carolina schools in cultivating compassion in their students, which could save animals’ lives and help all young people achieve their full compassionate potential. TeachKind has already sent urgent letters to the leaders of nearby South Carolina school districts stressing the need for humane education. https://lnkd.in/e4ydqeSf #torture #cruelty #animals #intervention #TeachKind #compassion #HumaneEducation #schools #students #advocate #AnimalRights #NoExcuse4AnimalAbuse #
