Transforming the global energy system to secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all.

About us

RMI is an independent nonprofit founded in 1982 that transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions to align with a 1.5°C future and secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all. We work in the world’s most critical geographies and engage businesses, policymakers, communities, and NGOs to identify and scale energy system interventions that will cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 50 percent by 2030. RMI has offices in Basalt and Boulder, Colorado; New York City; Oakland, California; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing.

Ammonia – an essential ingredient in chemical fertilizers – is usually made with fossil fuels. As a result, ammonia production centers tend to be concentrated in low-cost natural gas and coal regions such as the US Gulf, China, and Russia, necessitating lengthy and complicated supply chains to deliver the final product to end users. Distributed "green" ammonia made with renewable energy would reduce transportation costs and emissions, as well as provide additional flexibility and security to the ammonia industry. In the United States, Midwest states such as Minnesota are a major consumer of fertilizer and would benefit from the lower transportation costs associated with access to localized green ammonia production. RMI has put together a roadmap for advancing the decarbonization of ammonia production and the direct application of ammonia as a fertilizer in the state: https://bit.ly/4d3IzaT #Minnesota #Ammonia #Decarbonization #Fertilizer #Agriculture

Every day is garbage day at WasteMAP, a tool that visualizes the methane emissions from landfills around the world. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and understanding its sources is the first step toward reducing its impact. Additional data is being integrated into the WasteMAP platform as new methane monitoring technology comes online. "The reason why we have this pretty complex architecture in place for WasteMAP is that as we start getting more data, we can start stitching it together," RMI’s Tom Frankiewicz told Waste Dive. In a recent article, they explore the organizations – including Carbon Mapper, Industrious Labs, WM, and the Environmental Research & Education Foundation – that are working together to measure and reduce the climate impacts of our waste: https://bit.ly/3zFC5k0 #ClimateAction #Methane #WasteMangement

We are proud to engage in the eighth Global Think Tank Summit in Beijing, China, hosted by China Center for International Economic Exchanges. Focusing on development uncertainties, the summit gathers global leaders to advance innovative development solutions. The global climate is a central topic with insights from leaders including our CEO, Jon Creyts, “When I look at the exponential trends happening in clean energy, it covers about three-quarters of the overall climate challenge. One-quarter of the problem is where we need to build up our technical innovations.” Kingsmill Bond, RMI energy strategist, also emphasized, “We can drive this energy transition, but we will need to work night and day to make it happen. This is the fight of our time.”

From food to fashion — shipping containers carry the cargo that help us live our lives. But getting those containers off ships and away from ports is still a polluting process, with diesel-powered cranes, forklifts, and yard tractors doing the heavy lifting — and accounting for 15% of port emissions.    That’s why the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) and the Port of Long Beach (POLB) — two of the busiest container ports in the country — are working to accelerate pilots and deployment of zero-emissions cargo handling equipment with the goal of transitioning all cargo handling equipment to zero emissions by 2030.    In partnership with the Bezos Earth Fund, RMI and Mission Possible Partnership analyzed the total cost of ownership of four types of cargo handling equipment to provide stakeholders with an understanding of the technologies available today and their operational costs: https://bit.ly/461h2EC   #California #Decarbonization #EmissionsReduction #PortEmissions #EnergyTransition

    Director, RMI Islands Energy Program

I'm thrilled to share insights from my recent interview with Reuters. Small island nations (#SIDS) may contribute the least to climate change, but we bear its impacts the most. Our drive for more resilient renewable energy and resilient grids positions us as global leaders in the #RenewableEnergy transition. In 2022, #SIDS achieved a clean energy capacity of 7.6 GW – enough to power 5.7 million homes. With the development of #solarmicrogrid technology, we have a favorable pathway to reaching a 10 GW capacity by 2030. However, this ambitious goal will require at least $10 billion in financing. In this piece by Ben Payton, I discuss the potential of microgrids and the need for comprehensive financing solutions to scale these projects. Let's continue pushing for a sustainable and resilient future for our islands. #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #EnergyStorage #Microgrids #CaribbeanEnergy #Resilience Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eSpRrD8X

The exponential forces of renewables, electrification, and efficiency are disrupting the old energy system. As the drivers of change continue to overpower barriers, cleantech will continue to grow, pushing fossil fuel demand into terminal decline and pulling the Paris Agreement within reach. RMI experts are sharing their findings from the latest Cleantech Revolution report in two public webinars to highlight the recent progress of the global energy transition. For Europe and Asia, Kingsmill Bond will be presenting on Wednesday, July 17, 10–11 a.m. CEST. For the Americas, Daan Walter and Sam Butler-Sloss will be presenting on Wednesday, July 24, 1–2 p.m. ET. Clean tech investment is set to reach $2 trillion in 2024, reports Financial Times. While this is a remarkable achievement, it's crucial to recognize that spending is still less than half of the estimated level needed to achieve net-zero targets by the early 2030s. RMI’s Kingsmill Bond emphasizes the importance of looking at the shift in energy systems: "There’s no point looking at the size of the current fossil fuel system to work out where things are headed... You’ve got to look at the change." Global solar generation and battery storage capacity have seen unprecedented growth, and the focus on clean energy technologies is driving a competitive "race to the top" among global powers. Millions of renters face a brutal truth this summer: their apartments might not be cool enough to keep them safe. This puts low-income households and communities of color at a disadvantage, exposing them to higher risks of heat-related health issues. The disparity creates a critical gap in ensuring safe and healthy living conditions for all renters. Thankfully, the Inflation Reduction Act offers a potential path forward by investing in clean energy solutions and improving home energy efficiency. This could be a significant step towards bridging the gap in tenant protections and promoting energy security for vulnerable communities. Read on: https://bit.ly/3xCeno2
