SRNL hosted its annual Summer Intern Research Poster Session at the Applied Research Center in Aiken. The poster session provided an opportunity for summer interns to showcase research they completed during their summer internship. This year SRNL hosted the largest group of summer interns in its history – more than 80 interns representing 34 universities across the country and a variety of academic disciplines.

A multi-discipline R&D center solving the Nation's most challenging environmental and security problems.
About us
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multidiscipline research and development center, where accomplished scientists and engineers solve the Nation’s most challenging environmental and security problems. With a staff of more than 1,100 dedicated and safety-focused professionals, SRNL protects the nation by applying science to global security, the environment and the energy economy. The laboratory uses its unique scientific and engineering expertise to develop and deploy practical solutions with high returns on investment for the Nation. SRNL innovations include advances in energy storage technology, materials science, and nuclear non-proliferation. The laboratory also provides field-proven expertise for environmental cleanup and managing the Nation’s nuclear materials. SRNL conducts research in specialized laboratories for the safe study and handling of radioactive materials, laboratories for ultra-sensitive measurement and analysis of radioactive materials, internationally accredited analytical laboratories, and the only radiological crime investigation laboratory in the U.S. Working with an established network of industry, academic, and public partners, SRNL has advanced scientific discovery and commercial innovation. SRNL also fuels the Nation’s economy by licensing its patented technologies to private companies for commercialization. Whether it is optimizing chemical processes to safely dispose of legacy nuclear waste, collaborating with partners on grid security or using its expertise in nuclear materials science to make the world safer, SRNL works every day to secure the nation’s future.

Check out a new section of the SRNL website that highlights the work being done by SRNL to successfully develop, implement and deploy a new approach for robust monitoring of residual contaminants at groundwater sites. The ALTEMIS approach includes incorporating in situ, real-time early warning systems, deploying spatially integrative monitoring methods, and developing modeling approaches to improve the success and quality of monitoring, while reducing overall cost. https://lnkd.in/dTHvg57v

Fusion can play a major role in the energy transition as a firm, non-carbon emitting power source. SRNL is developing advanced fusion energy technologies to create an economic, efficient fuel cycle for a fusion pilot plant. This includes technologies to enable faster processing rates, provide lower overall tritium inventory, and account real-time for tritium in the system. SRNL is also developing improved material solutions for fusion systems, structures, and components that reduce tritium retention and permeation. SRNL hosted a series of Environmental Stewardship and Nanomaterials Bootcamps for college students and professors from University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and Clinton College. Bootcamp participants created nanoscale materials, used state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities to understand their physio-chemical properties, and used sensors for detection of environmental contaminants. The students gained hands-on laboratory experience under the direction of SRNL staff and developed a better understanding of SRNL’s dedication to the Environmental Management cleanup mission. Future bootcamps will be held to strengthen connections with university partners and continue to provide experiential educational opportunities for students.
