About us
Shelter Scotland is a charity that works to alleviate the distress caused by homelessness and bad housing in Scotland. HELP AND ADVICE Shelter Scotland provides free, confidential advice to people with all kinds of housing problems. Face-to-face, over the phone and online, we’re committed to giving expert advice and support, tailored to the individual. FIGHTING FOR CHANGE Shelter Scotland tackles the root causes of the housing crisis by challenging the people in power to make our vision of a home for everyone a reality. We lobby the government and local authorities for new laws and policies, and more investment, to improve the lives of homeless and badly housed people. Our campaigns bring the reality of the housing crisis to the attention of the media and the public, who help us fight for solutions. INFORMING PROFESSIONALS We develop practical solutions to address the housing crisis and work with the housing sector to promote good practice, publish reports, and deliver professional training. www.shelterscotland.org

"Delivering more social housing is the only way to provide permanent homes for the 10,000 children in Scotland who are trapped in temporary accommodation. So, ultimately, investing in social homes is also investing in Scotland’s future." - Alison Watson, Shelter Scotland Director
We're currently supporting Shelter Scotland on a 3-year project looking at the social value of moving into social housing in Scotland. The latest report builds on previous publications and presents findings from the quantitative data provided by partner organisations up to the start of February 2024 capturing and measuring the social value generated through the provision of new social tenancies in newly built, refurbished, and non-refurbished social housing stock in Scotland Understanding how social housing tenancies impact positively on individuals, including health, wellbeing, and life circumstances, such as economic and employment status, is key to developing projects that create true positive impact. We congratulate John Swinney on his appointment as new First Minister of Scotland. He becomes First Minister at a critical time for the country. A time at which a household becomes homeless every 16 minutes, and 45 children become homeless every day. This cannot go on. We have sent a letter to the new First Minister, inviting and welcoming him to an open discussion with us to talk about how he plans to address the #HousingEmergency and find safe and secure homes for the 10,000 children currently stuck in temporary accommodation. You can read our letter in full, here 👇
