The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Shirley's Boundary Channel Drive at I-395 Interchange Project was held on Thursday, May 30th in Arlington, Virginia. Shirley joined officials from the Virginia Department of Transportation, Arlington County Government, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, The Pentagon, National Park Service, and members of the local community to commemorate the project's completion. In partnership with its design partner Dewberry, Shirley built two new roundabouts on either side of Interstate 395 to transform a dilapidated stretch of roadway near the nation's capital into a modern example of smart urban infrastructure. The project reduced the total pavement area while introducing much needed safety and mobility improvements. Pedestrians and cyclists are now enjoying new sidewalks and shared use paths, including a dedicated connection to the Mt. Vernon Trail near the Pentagon Lagoon. New lighting and landscaping features also contribute to the Project's community-oriented safety and sustainability objectives. During the Route 7 ribbon cutting ceremony, NVTA CEO Monica Backmon said, "This is what regionalism looks like. Groundbreakings mean progress, ribbon cuttings mean we are here and we are open!" Route 7 has always been important for the region's economic vitality, especially for Fairfax County Department of Transportation and Loudoun County Government commuters, who will now spend less time traveling to their destinations!
