On this week's #UnlockingMoves, my good friend Paul Hedrick talks about his entrepreneurial journey with Tecovas - from facing tons of rejection to starting a kickass direct-to-consumer boot company. Tecovas might be taking over the world now, but in the early days, Paul struggled to raise capital from even his "Friends and Family"! Enough people ultimately believed in his vision, and he put his research skills and his drive to find his super power to work (a GREAT combo for entrepreneurs btw) and the rest is history. SPOILER ALERT: even though he wasn't able to convince some of his friends to invest - he was able to convince a total stranger in Austin to invest -- ME! (I'm either gullible or a genius!) As an investor, I usually invest more in the entrepreneur than the product or vision. I'm proud to have played a small role in Paul's story. Luckily, Tecovas boots are a GREAT product!     Before Team Tecovas dove into the busyness of the holiday season, we sat down with our dedicated Customer Service Operations Manager, Krystal Kay Cortez, to hear her campfire story. Krystal Kay, or KK as we know her, has been with Tecovas since 2019 and has played an integral role on our Customer Service team. 🤠 Can you tell us a little more about your role with Tecovas?  I am honored to be the Customer Service Operations Manager. Collaborating with a dynamic team, I oversee critical operations such as quality assurance, training, communication, and improving processes that contribute to our exceptional customer service. 🤠 What does radical hospitality mean to you, and how does that come through in your training process?  Radical hospitality is a huge focus of our training. We know Tecovas would not exist without our customers, so we seek to welcome everyone regardless of their background or circumstance. Our job is to ensure every customer feels cared for and knows they can count on us for assistance. I like to say “if you take care of your customers, they will take care of you.” 🤠 Tecovas has a lot of great and loyal customers - can you share one of your favorite customer stories with us?  One of my favorite customers is someone who started her email with, “when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping” and ended with, “Thoughts become things, choose the good ones” This customer was diagnosed with cancer and was treating herself to one of our clutches since she planned to be a survivor. Through our Texans on Service program, we gifted her a tote to match her clutch. Throughout the conversation, she was incredibly positive and thankful for our assistance. A few weeks later, she emailed to let us know she was cancer-free. Her correspondence inspired many of our agents, and to this day, I often think about the powerful words she shared! 🤠 The busy holiday season is right around the corner, what are some things the CX team is doing to prepare for the higher volume of customer inquiries and requests?  We are focused heavily on training new hires to assist with higher call volume and conducting continuous training to keep the team up-to-date while boosting the quality of service we offer. While we may be assisting more customers in Q4, it is crucial to us that the quality of service we provide doesn't waver. Lastly, our team has been focused on creating a team atmosphere designed to grow future leaders in our department and ensure the Customer Service team is ready to support the exciting growth of Tecovas.

    When you walk into the Tecovas store in Denver, CO, you’ll meet Assistant Store Manager Guillermo Piñon, and if you’re lucky, you’ve seen his mastery of leather and product care. We sat down with Guillermo this month and asked him how working for Tecovas allows him to showcase his passion in a way that aligns with our Spirit of the West culture. 🤠 What is your favorite part of working for Tecovas?  The people. Our customer base is full of incredible folks who make every day something to look forward to. My colleagues create a great environment to be in and provide innumerable opportunities to better myself and others each time I walk through our doors. 🤠 How did you learn how to boot shine?  What’s your best tip for taking care of boots?  Growing up, I participated in raising a variety of livestock for show and market. After consistent wear in questionable conditions, I looked to YouTube and online forums to extend the life of my boots. I also played baseball and took an interest in leather care and re-lacing early on, which led to leather working and repairs at a deeper level. My best tip for caring for boots would be to invest in high-quality products specified for hide type, as certain tools work better for certain applications. Cream polishes provide incredible protection on top of the great shining properties, and a good neutral option allows for more versatility in any collection. 🤠 How do you share your knowledge of boot and leather care with customers? I always walk through the process with customers, explaining product information, methods, and substitutions. Many times, I write down specific details for customers so they have the proper resources to shine their boots on their own. 🤠 How do you approach our culture of radical hospitality in customer service? Every time a customer comes in, there is an opportunity to make a new friend. Personal connection is incredibly important these days, and most people don’t expect that additional effort in a retail setting. I am a people person in general and want nothing more than for our customers to leave our store feeling comfortable and confident in whatever item they decide on.
