Our mission is to engage people with animals, inspire appreciation for our seas, and to support wildlife conservation.

About us

The Texas State Aquarium (TSA) is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) wildlife conservation-focused institution. Established in 1990 and designated as the official Aquarium of Texas, the Texas State Aquarium is ranked among the top 5 best aquariums in the nation by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. Each year, it attracts over 600,000 visitors, showcasing the sights, sounds, and vibrant wildlife of the Caribbean and South Texas Gulf Coast. As a non-profit, the Aquarium relies on support from admissions, donors, and members to further its mission of education and wildlife conservation. Operating since 1995, the Aquarium's Wildlife Rescue Program is the only one in Texas licensed to care for injured mammals, sea turtles, shorebirds, and raptors. It has successfully released 4,450 animals back into their natural habitats. In March 2023, with support from numerous donors, the Port Corpus Christi Center for Wildlife Rescue opened, featuring vital science and technology, including Texas's only wildlife CT scan machine and an emergency deployable field stabilization system. Dedicated to workforce development, the Aquarium reached 30,487 students in 2023, spanning primary to graduate education. The Flint Hills Resources Center for Excellence in STEM Education integrates best practices from education, research, and industry to advance STEM learning in South Texas and beyond. The Wildlife Response Operations Center (WROC) at the Texas State Aquarium is a formalized framework for emergency response along the Texas Gulf Coast. The first of its kind in the country, it leads disaster and wildlife response planning, training, and operations. WROC partners include Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas General Land Office, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), National Park Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, Port of Corpus Christi, and the Texas State Aquarium.

During weather events, from tropical storms to winter freezes, the Aquarium and our Wildlife Rescue operations must be ready to care for our resident animals and potentially care for wildlife impacted by the storm. Jesse Gilbert, President and CEO of the Texas State Aquarium, discussed with The Weather Channel how we closely monitor weather conditions and prepared for Hurricane Beryl. Not only is our Wildlife Rescue program the leading program in the nation, but our Wildlife Response Operations Center, is the country's only emergency operations center dedicated to wildlife. Working with our partners, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas General Land Office, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, National Park Service, U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and Port Corpus Christi, we are prepared to handle large numbers of animals in need of rescue and rehabilitation during extreme weather conditions. Our Center for Wildlife Rescue has admitted eight hurricane-evacuated birds from Houston. These Mississippi Kite fledglings are now in our Bird Intensive Care Unit, receiving round-the-clock care from our Wildlife Rescue Team. With hand-feedings three times a day and close monitoring, we're working hard on their rehabilitation. Once these birds are stronger and have grown a bit more, the goal is for them to undergo live prey tests to prepare for their return to the wild just in time for fall migration. ✨ Your support makes rescue stories like this happen. If you would like to help, simply text RESCUE to 501501 and donate $10.* or visit our website to find more ways you can get involved. https://bit.ly/464bTLQ *A $10.00 donation will be added to your mobile bill. This weekend, the Texas State Aquarium proudly celebrated our 34th anniversary! On July 6, 1990, we officially opened our doors to the public. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our guests, staff, members, donors, and followers who have made our mission of education, inspiration, and conservation possible over the past 34 years. We are especially grateful to the Junior League of Corpus Christi, the local Jaycees, and Leadership Corpus Christi Alumni (LCCA) for their vision starting in 1969 to build the local Aquarium. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in our journey, and we couldn't have come this far without you. Thank you for being a part of our history.

Did you catch us on The Weather Channel over the weekend? Just a couple of weeks ago, during Tropical Storm Alberto, while we were moving staff back and forth due to flooded roads on North Beach to take care of the animals, we met Molly McCollum and her crew from The Weather Channel. Fast forward two weeks, and we reconnected to talk about preparations and lessons learned during Alberto. It was broadcasted live at a national level, providing a great opportunity to share our experiences, spotlight our Wildlife Response Operations, and emphasize the importance of being prepared. 🌧️🐠 Shout out to The Weather Channel! Keep up the great coverage to keep Texas informed.
