As young adults, family relationships have a huge impact on how we see the world. In this clip, The Dorm Clinical Supervisor Mat Elder, LICSW, explains how it's important to enter family therapy with an open heart andf self-compassion as you begin to dismantle systems that may not have served you in the past (and hold onto the ones that did!). This is especially true for clients exploring their gender and identity. At The Dorm, up to 30% of our clients identify as trans, and groups like Transgender Nonbinary Process Group, as well as parent coaching and intensive family therapy, help our clients and their parents redefine how their relationships will look as they grow and emerge into adulthood. One third of those experiencing symptoms of #schizophrenia don't see improvement, despite multiple trials of anti-psychotic medications. As part of a new summer series, featuring leading voices in young adult mental health, we learn from Dr. Rocco Marotta of Silver Hill Hospital how "treatment resistant" schizophrenia may be on the rise due to higher rates and potency of cannabis use in young adults, among other factors (plus how treatment providers can help support young people experiencing #psychosis with "5 Pillars of Care.") This month during #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth we honor the memory of Bebe Moore Campbell, journalist, author, and mental health advocate, who wrote and worked to lift up the voices and agency of those whose experiences were often overlooked. In 2006, she wrote of her family’s experience learning that her close relative was diagnosed with bipolar disorder: "Once my loved one accepted the diagnosis, healing began for the entire family, but it took too long. It took years. Can't we, as a nation, begin to speed up that process? We need a national campaign to destigmatize mental illness, especially one targeted toward African Americans [...] Recovery is possible." Today with the help of Mental Health America we're shining a light on some common mental health myths (vs. reality) that persist, and what we know today to be true of working towards recovery. #strengthincommunities #bipocmhm #bebemoorecampbell

Congratulations to our DC team for leading an engaging and successful #FamilyDay at The Dorm DC this past weekend! 💜 Family work is a cornerstone of care at The Dorm, and our family days are an invaluable opportunity for clients and parents to come together for in-person learning, community, and connection. This year our team designed several interactive workshops exploring #EffectiveCommunication, #FamilyRoles, and #Boundaries, and had the chance to bond as community over shared meals, games, and a mindfulness meditation session. Many thanks to Assistant Director Amie DiTomasso, LICSW, MPH for taking the lead in this season's event, and to our entire DC team for your dedication, enthusiasm, and expertise in family care. #familytherapy #grouptherapy #youngadultmentalhealth

Tomorrow our organization will be closed to honor #Juneteenth, a date that marks the end of slavery in the United States. On that day in 1865, more than 250,000 Black Americans learned they were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a time for celebration and an opportunity for reflection. Below are the many ways our local communities can do just that: Events in New York City:  - Juneteenth NYC Organization's 15th Annual Juneteenth Weekend continues through Wednesday (Multiple Locations). This year’s theme is "Unveiled: Understanding the Journey from our Roots." - Wednesday, June 19th: Juneteenth March 5K Run/Walk/Roll Central Park - Join for a 1pm start (rain or shine). All proceeds go towards the building fund of the Harlem Community Center. (Organized by EliteFeet.com) Events in Washington, DC: - Tuesday, June 18th: Juneteenth Celebration with PLAYBACK THEATER INC's William G McGowan Theater - An interactive performance featuring Playback Theater/Verbal Gymnastics, a cast of actors, musicians, and storytellers. - Wednesday, June 19th: Juneteenth Freedom Celebration at the Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum. #AmplifyingBlackVoices: Resources from The Dorm’s POC affinity group that celebrate the stories, experiences, and voices of our Black community all year long: https://lnkd.in/e8mUkvPT
