We are thrilled to see our clients, Resetting the Table - Melissa Weintraub, one of New Pluralists's Healing Starts Here grantees, featured in this insightful conversation that dives into some of the most pressing questions of our time: - Why bother engaging with people with whom I disagree? - Is polarization necessary for social progress? - Are there “red lines” for people we shouldn’t engage with? - Is what you do “both sides”-ism? - What’s a concrete example where you’ve seen this kind of bridge-building effort pay off? We are proud to support organizations leading these critical conversations and fostering understanding across divides. #SocialImpact #Democracy #CommunityHealing #Engagement https://lnkd.in/gagNd99b

Thank you David Stanley. These are great takeaways.
I'm feeling energized coming out of this week's Democracy Funders Network (DFN) Strategy Summit in Boulder, CO. Hats off to Mike Berkowitz, Emily Thielmann, Carly Straus Chan, Toby Cavalier, Hillary Hooke, and others for curating such an impactful and thought-provoking conference that brought together many of the leading funders, donor collaboratives, and practitioners in the democracy space. I'm thinking about three things coming out of my discussions at the DFN summit... First, it's crucial for us to build as big a tent as possible in combatting authoritarianism and fighting for small "d" democracy. The long-term work of re-weaving our civic fabric requires us to find places for many more people (left, center, right) to engage together and see themselves as an integral part of this shared project. I'm inspired to see a number of groups leading the way, including Civic (Re)Solve, Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE), Civic Health Project, New Pluralists, and Trust for Civic Life. Second, a key pillar of our democracy - the integrity of our elections - faces an acute threat in 2024 and we need to channel resources right now to the organizations best positioned to ensure that the election process in November affirms (rather than erodes) public trust. I'm proud to be working with my Arabella Advisors colleagues to support Tiana Epps-Johnson (Center for Tech and Civic Life), Jake Matilsky (Center for Secure and Modern Elections), and Sam Oliker-Friedland (Institute for Responsive Government) in their efforts through the Resilient Elections Network to meet this moment and support the integrity of our elections in states and localities across the country. Third, our elections processes are deeply in need of upgrades to make them more democractic and responsive to voters, who far too often feel like their votes (and voices) don't matter. We should be investing seriously in innovations (that are taking hold in some states, and being pursued in others) to make this possible, from open primaries, to ranked choice and fusion voting, to proportional representation. It's great to see Unite America, FairVote, and Center for Ballot Freedom taking on this structural reform work. Grateful for this week's conversations and the collaborative possibilities ahead.

Excellent article by Constance Matthiessen of Inside Philanthropy about the important work of the San Francisco Education Fund, a unique coalition of funders, nonprofits, local government, and the San Francisco Unified School District working together to enhance literacy outcomes for the city's students. In 2022, the Hellman Foundation invested seed funding in the Literacy Coalition, a project of the San Francisco Education Fund. According to Associate Director, Dorian Luey, “The coalition is working in lockstep with the district. They understand what the gaps are, they're filling those gaps with all of the community-based organizations that are working in literacy. And then with groups that are also at the table, they're engaging the parents and families to hold the district accountable for student success.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gJxwDiFX #sanfrancisco #education #philanthropy #literacy

Earlier this week, our Vice President, Emily Thielmann, facilitated an important conversation that engaged the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania philanthropy community in meaningful dialogue about the many possibilities that come from investing in effective nonpartisan civic engagement. Thank you to all of the partners and participants! #DemocracyFundersNetwork #Democracy #SocialImpact
Today, Philadelphia Health Partnership was honored to co-host a funders forum with the William Penn Foundation and Democracy Funders Network about democracy and civic engagement. Thank you to our speakers - A. Salewa O. from Pennsylvania Voice, Lauren Cristella from Committee of Seventy, and Trevor McNary from the Trusted Elections Fund – for helping to educate us about your work. The dialogue today reinforced that philanthropic investment in the health of our democracy and civic life must extend well beyond election cycles. Funders and civil society can help foster things like a strong news and media ecosystem, effective governing institutions that deliver for people well after their voters are cast, and the kind of belonging and social trust that undergird a healthy pluralist society. Even in the face of this long-term agenda, we discussed critical near-term opportunities in 2024 to foster nonpartisan civic engagement and ensure safe, accessible, and trusted elections in our city and our state. We extend our gratitude to Jessica Richards at the William Penn Foundation for her leadership in organizing this event with PHP and to Emily Thielmann from the Democracy Funders Network (https://lnkd.in/gW4kK472) for facilitating a rich conversation. Follow Pennsylvania Voice, Committee of Seventy, and the Trusted Elections Fund to learn more about work underway to promote a healthy democracy in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.
