Big news this morning! DOE signed a $42 million agreement with the State of Tennessee that will fund grants for a wide range of local projects that enhance the area’s natural resources and provide nature and recreational opportunities. Grant applications do not have a minimum value and can go as high as millions of dollars for projects in Anderson and Roane counties and portions of Loudon and Knox counties. Lots of work to make this possible by a trustee council comprised of members from the U.S. Department of Energy - Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Valley Authority, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). https://lnkd.in/eaNUBrja

About us
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) is tasked with removing deteriorated facilities and legacy waste dating back to the Manhattan Project and Cold War. That mission spans three sites on the Oak Ridge Reservation—the Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and East Tennessee Technology Park. Our projects at these sites are removing risks and hazards, enhancing safety, opening land for re-development, and modernizing campuses to enable important science and energy research and national security missions. We’ve made significant progress, and future projects will continue this transformation. Cleanup at the East Tennessee Technology Park converted a shuttered uranium enrichment complex into a multi-use industrial park that’s attracting hundreds of millions of dollars in new investments to the region. Our portfolios at the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are eliminating old, contaminated buildings to clear away hazards and open land for expanding research and national security missions.

Our crews just completed the largest soil remediation at the East Tennessee Technology Park. The 3-year project removed more than 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil, which equates to nearly 8,500 dump truck loads. We’re slated to finish all soil work at ETTP this summer moving us closer to our ultimate vision for the site. https://lnkd.in/ejrG2bEY

Our transformation of the East Tennessee Technology Park is being recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We won a Federal Facility Excellence in Site Reuse award. The award recognizes exceptional work remediating a federal site for beneficial use that creates positive impacts to the community. After two decades of successful cleanup, the 2,200-acre former uranium enrichment site is now home to a multi-use industrial park, Manhattan Project National Historical Park, and nature conservation area. https://lnkd.in/exVbv-yR

Isotek surpassed our goal of processing 35 canisters of uranium-233 in 2024. They've already processed 39 canisters so far this year, bringing the total to 100 canisters for our highest priority cleanup project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The current processing campaign is 25% complete and slated for completion in 2026. This project is providing material for promising cancer treatment research. https://lnkd.in/gf9pdcPV

With demolition complete and soil cleanup finishing this summer at the former K-25 Site, our focus is now on groundwater. This marks our last phase of cleanup at that site. We recently signed an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) so fieldwork can begin. In the Main Plant Area, teams will use an item you have in your kitchen to reduce contamination.
