The global upstream industry is anticipated to see an increased number of deals through the remainder of 2024, which could be worth $150 billion. M&A activity in North America specifically is expected to be a driving force for the rest of the year. In the first quarter of 2024, dealmaking in the sector increased 145% globally year-over-year and has been at its highest since 2019. In January, the Biden Administration announced the pause of new licenses for LNG exports, but this decision is having an impact far beyond just the US. Being the largest exporter of LNG in the world, countries are dependent on LNG exports from America to keep their economies steady. This pause greatly impacts the global energy sector, and is predicted to intensify global coal emissions, as LNG is often used as a cleaner and more accessible alternative. While renewables are playing an important part in the energy transition, it is unrealistic to rely solely on renewable sources as they cannot alone meet our modern energy needs, and may never fully takeover the energy grid. Energy innovations are instead powering the current energy landscape, working with sources that are already readily available, including technological advancements with blue hydrogen, natural gas and nuclear fusion. Working to lower emissions through continuous improvements can help us work towards a more successful energy transition. The IEA’s latest Gas Market Report is predicting an increased global gas demand for the year ahead as consumption rises. Demand is predicted to increase by 2.5%, or 100 billion cubic meters (bcm), a much larger increase than in 2023. We're expected to see demand growth in price-sensitive industrial sectors and in residential and commercial sectors. Particularly, the Asia Pacific region, North America and the Middle East are poised for growth. It's more important than ever for us to have the tools and technology to meet demand where it is. Energy companies around the world have been making commitments to sustainability in order to reach net-zero emissions, and are taking a deeper look into their approaches to be able to achieve this. Recently, the CEO of Baker Hughes Lorenzo Simonelli has acknowledged LNG as a climate solution to help the industry reach these goals amidst rising demand, and their customers plan to boost their natural gas exposure in the next several years.
