Black communities face unique mental health challenges and amid the community's longstanding stigma around mental health care, just 1 in 3 Black adults with mental illness receives treatment, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. With #mentalhealth a growing crisis for Black communities nationwide, programs like The Confess Project Of America Official Page or Beyond the Cut lean into the natural flow of sharing inherent in barbershops and salons, giving barbers and stylists tools to care for their communities. “Barbers and stylists have always been a safe place,” said Lorenzo Lewis, The Confess Project of America's founder. “When you think about the Civil Rights era, the NAACP did a lot of civic engagement through those shops. They’re pivotal for transforming how we talk about mental health, following what has already been laid before us.” Read more about how barbers help Black communities in Marc Ramirez's story: https://lnkd.in/ehXnXeAC

Everyone loves gathering for Fourth of July cookouts, cooling off in the water and seeing big firework displays on #IndependenceDay. But not everyone is a fan of the loud noise that fireworks bring. Some armchair investors would like to see Donald Trump steering the economy. Others prefer Joe Biden. But if there’s one thing all investors eschew, it’s uncertainty. And nothing says uncertainty quite like the 2024 election. Betterment, the financial advisory company, recently surveyed 1,200 investors, asking what word best conveyed their feelings about the upcoming election. The most popular response: “Anxious.” Another survey, from the asset management firm Janus Henderson, found 78% of affluent investors voicing concern about the election. A third poll, from the Nationwide Retirement Institute, found 76% of investors on edge. Election anxiety weighs heavy on American investors. You want uncertainty? Many in the president’s own party are calling on him to exit the race. The other party’s presumptive nominee is running as a convicted felon. By now, it’s a pretty well-known “hack” to reach out to an #airline on social media if you’re experiencing a disruption to your trip. Find tips on how to complain to U.S. carriers in Zach Wichter's story: https://lnkd.in/egvm8w2b Most U.S. carriers have a robust social media presence and use the messaging feature to help with #customerservice requests. It can be a good way to avoid long hold times on the phone or extended waits to connect with an agent through the airline’s own app. And according to Emplify, most customer questions get answered on Instagram.

Is conservative America’s war on Big Tech running out of steam? The belief that social media platforms are biased against conservative voices and views is widespread among Republicans. But the Supreme Court signaled this week that key elements of laws passed in Florida and Texas to limit how these platforms moderate online speech would not withstand First Amendment scrutiny. It was the second ruling in less than a week to disappoint conservatives. "We can't expect any help from the courts," tweeted one GOP lawmaker.
What Supreme Court rulings mean for Trump and conservative America's war on Big Tech

The average size of U.S. homes is shrinking. According to the data from the Census Bureau, new single-family houses in the first quarter of 2024 had a median size of 2,140 square feet, which is 115 square feet smaller than last year. The dwindling size is a reflection of first-time homebuyers' increasing needs: Nearly 30% of new home owners are single and not looking for large spaces, while also grappling with record-high home prices that have been steadily growing over the past decade. #homeprices #housingmarket Learn more at USA TODAY https://lnkd.in/e5d5wZiq

As Jamaica braces for a potentially devastating strike from Hurricane Beryl, many on the U.S. Gulf Coast are watching and waiting, if not for an organized Beryl, but for the rain it could bring along the Gulf Coast. National Hurricane Center director Michael Brennan on Tuesday advised residents on the Texas coast to keep checking on the forecast through the long holiday weekend. Beryl and its peak winds of 165 mph have definitely earned a place in the history books. Beryl is the first to form so far east in the Atlantic in June, the third earliest major hurricane in Atlantic, the strongest July hurricane on record and the earliest Category 5 on record. At USA TODAY, we are publishing live updates on Beryl's potential track and the devastation the hurricane is leaving in its wake in the Caribbean, including on Carriacou.
