Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
About us
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

Earlier this year, photographer Diego Delso – also known as User:Poco a poco – has reached a remarkable milestone: 1,000 featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons! Featured pictures are images that the Wikimedia Commons community has chosen as some of the finest on the website. Diego had his first featured picture in January 2012. Now, more than 5% of all featured pictures on Commons were photographed by him. 👏🏽 From architecture to endangered species, Diego’s work covers a diverse range of subjects. His dedication illustrates the impact of volunteer contributions to Wikimedia Commons' vast multimedia library, sharing an array of wildlife and culture with the world. Asked about his motivations, Diego explained: “I enjoy traveling a lot and had a decent camera with me, so I felt that I could really make a difference to Commons with my contributions. In fact, I consider myself a bit adventurous and also enjoy visiting places which are not mainstream. Images from those places are not frequent and are valuable to the project.” Commenting on his growth during the journey to 1,000 featured pictures, Diego shared that “Wikimedia Commons has been an inspiration to try out different things, like studio or macro photography.” He has even published a significant number of photos that were taken underwater. Diego also shared his advice for aspiring Commons photographers: “If you nominate images to featured pictures or quality images, what you are doing, in other words, is asking for feedback about your work. So you have to be ready to get and accept this feedback, especially if it isn’t the one you expect … be patient and understand feedback as a treasure, and use it as a stimulus to get better.” Explore more of Diego's stunning photography ➡️ https://w.wiki/9xjh

🎉 Today, we are celebrating 21 years of the Wikimedia Foundation! From humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of free knowledge on the web, we have come a long way, thanks to the dedication and passion of our global community. 🌐🎂 In our work, we support 14 free knowledge projects and hundreds of thousands of volunteers who edit, expand, and curate them. Together with a number of affiliate organizations, we form the Wikimedia movement, unified by a single mission: a world in which every single person on this planet can access, participate, and share in the sum of all human knowledge. On this special occasion, we want to hear from you! When did you first get involved with Wikimedia? What project or article first sparked your interest? Share your story with us!

You may have noticed a slight change on Wikipedia over the last few days. A small menu titled “Appearance” is now available next to the content area, allowing readers to choose the size of the text and the width of the page. These new typography options are based on academic research and design prototypes created by different Wikipedia community members from all over the world. The old font size was introduced over a decade ago, when computer monitors and browser-based reading expectations were very different from what they are today. The changes will improve readability and accessibility for billions of people that access Wikipedia in over 300 languages. Learn more about the process behind this work ➡️ https://w.wiki/APUT

“As Chief Communications Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia, Anusha Alikhan is inviting everyone to contribute to women’s history.” Our very own CCO Anusha Alikhan was recognized by Chief with The New Era of Leadership Award for Purpose. Anusha has been a strong spokesperson for the Wikipedia Needs More Women campaign, which supports the work of global Wikimedia volunteers in increasing content about women to Wikipedia, as well as engaging more women contributions from around the world on our projects. 👏 https://lnkd.in/dEg8A5Be

The Wikimedia movement is a global community of contributors to Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia, which are united by the vision of empowering everyone to share in the sum of human knowledge. No matter your country, skill set, or interests, there’s a place in our movement for you. 🌟🌐 Wikimedia affiliates include chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups. 📚 Chapters are independent nonprofits that support the movement's work, focusing on a specific location in the world – such as Wikimedia Deutschland, the very first chapter to be created almost 20 years ago. 🌍 Thematic organizations are also nonprofits, but they support work around a specific topic, regardless of country. Amical Wikimedia, for example, focuses on the Catalan language and culture. 🔍 User groups are open membership groups of Wikimedians that can be based on geography or specific interests. They are designed to be easy to start. Two examples: the Wikimedia Community User Group Côte d'Ivoire, for Wikimedians living in or connected to Côte d'Ivoire, and Wikimedia LGBT+, which promotes the development of LGBTQI+ content on Wikimedia projects and supports LGBTQI+ individuals engaged in Wikimedia activities. 🤝 Do you have an idea for a user group? Take your favorite local museum to where the visitors are by sharing it on Wikimedia projects 🖼️📖 The theme for this year’s International Museum Day is “Museums for Education and Research”. Wikimedia projects help support that goal by ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for everyone, everywhere. When you share your local museum on Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia and its sister projects, you help #OpenTheKnowledge. Since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has celebrated International Museum Day on 18 May. And since 2020, Wikimedia Switzerland (Wikimedia CH) has organized an associated Wikimedia campaign with European affiliates, mostly from German-speaking countries. This year, Wikimedia Switzerland and the Wikimedia Foundation are encouraging a more global celebration of museums. Wikimedia collaborators are invited to respond to three challenges to increase museum coverage on our free knowledge projects: translation, media, and data. Join us ➡️ https://w.wiki/A2aZ
