Bloomberg reports that Apple has finally completed that deal with OpenAI with the full announcement planned for June 10th at the worldwide developers' conference (WWDC). After seeing OpenAI's latest platform, ChatGPT 4o, and its clear Siri-killer voice assistant https://lnkd.in/ew_BbxvU, I'm excited about this. That said, in the short team, it seems like an AI defeat for Apple. One of Apple's consistent calling cards has been focusing on a vertical model in which they own the tech behind every piece of the experience though not for some things like external search (Google). That said, because AI is meant not only as a chatbot but in making a host of existing software better, it does signal to me how behind Apple is in the AI arms race currently. Clearly, the state of now doesn't need to be the state of tomorrow. Apple is a market leader in the smartphone space snagging the top position in 1Q 2024 in global smartphone sales for the iPhone Pro Max https://lnkd.in/eXCSeQ5n. So given that advantage, they still have the economy of scale at their disposal if they can move quickly enough to negate the early market lead of AI tech from OpenAI and Google, both partners and competitors. #ai #apple #chatgpt

I don't think I'm too late to the party. Here's my first Luma AI video (queued for 4-6 hours). I'm not very experienced with video generators, but I've been playing #RunwayML for the past few months. My first impression of prompt-to-video: (+) The video has much more movements and character action than anything I got with runway, like way more. (+) 6 seconds, instead of 4. (+) Runway has a protection against multiple types of scenes (some of which I definitely agree with, but some I find restrictive, if you want to explore the action and horror movie genre). This one is meant for an action movie and it wasn't blocked as too violent, which I appreciate. (-) a few more gen-ai defects than I was lead to expect, but still acceptable for now (if you're looking for that gen-ai style). (-) announced time-to-generate 120 seconds which is slower than runway (even for 50% longer sequence). https://lnkd.in/eeBgyStA Overall, the current developments pace in the field leads me to think that in a year, we'll have something like 3x faster generation and close to perfect cinematic videos every time. We'll see.

🏮 Short-form Narrative Pipelines for Social Platforms, Part 3 🏮 To help us streamline our workflow, we worked with Chaos, Epic Games, NVIDIA, and Lenovo to push the real time rendering envelope by fully ray tracing live using Unreal Engine. For those unfamiliar with the nuances of lighting and rendering, here's a high level breakdown along with an explanation as to why FULLY ray tracing is a big deal: Games use a rendering technique called rasterization to light environments. Basically, individual pixels in a 3D mesh are shaded based on how lights in the environment hit each pixel. While computationally intensive, game engines are able to handle the workload in real time. That's why when you walk down a street in a video game it feels like you're in a 3D world, even though you're viewing that world on a 2D screen -- the horizon/environment is being rendered in real time as you walk, so it feels like you're in it. Movies and TV shows on the other hand use ray tracing to light environments. Working backwards from the POV of the viewer, ray tracing is a physics-based rendering technique that follows (traces) light paths (photons) as they bounce off objects. This technique is more computationally intensive than rasterized rendering and is done offline on servers after a scene has been filmed. Harnessing the power of modern GPUs, ray tracing produces images that are indistinguishable from reality, and that's why films look more "real" than games. The holy grail for games is to achieve film quality rendered environments, while the holy grail for 3D films is to be able to see a final frame image in real time. Certain game engines, like Unreal Engine, come equipped with a ray traced effect added on top of the rasterized image. This gives the game an incredible look right out of the box, but to get to that film quality bar, you need to go that extra little mile. You need to FULLY ray trace. That means film teams will film once in engine and then re-render everything they just filmed offline to reach that film quality bar. That means more time and more $$. Working with the team at Chaos, they live linked Chaos Vantage directly into Unreal Engine. This gave us two screens when filming. One that showed the scene in Unreal and one that showed the same scene in Vantage. Both were capturing in real time. The scene in Vantage was fully ray traced live at about 30fps (see example below). This allowed us to get really close to a final frame image in real time, which we presented at NVIDIA GTC22. Why is this a big deal? Because the director can CHOOSE what shot to finish rendering offline instead of re-rendering everything. It's a much more agile workflow that reduces the time between concept and market. I think it's overall best is to let this thing fade back into nothingness. But if any credible press decide to write about Terrence Howard's (or other people's claims) of him "inventing XR," here's your technical background info: What Terrence Howard's failed/abandoned patent describes is a subset of the CAVE idea, invented ~20 years earlier (1990s). His patent application would have been (and probably was) challenged by any competent examiner. see: https://lnkd.in/gurbMwsT As you move around a special room, fixed 2D displays in or on the walls change the perspective of the CGI displayed to match what you would see if it was true 3D. In Howard's patent, it's just the windows that are dynamic displays, walls are just walls. So it's a narrower subset of the CAVE idea. Some of us in the field have built these kinds of rooms, and well before Howard wrote down his idea. In fact, some of us even looked at making airplane windows virtual (<- would make airplanes much more efficient). It's a big challenge. I'd generally prefer to not have to wear any HMDs for XR if the room itself could create the required illusions. But this particular approach is more expensive and doesn't scale well. You either have to grow these video walls to be the size of Hollywood movie sound stages (see today's LED walls used in production), or you have to wear special glasses (again) that allow more modestly-sized walls to show different views to different people in close sequence (120/240/higher fps). If you do this wrong, people will get sick or at least very confused. Either way, this set of issues is exactly what lead people to try to make the individually-worn HMD approach viable and affordable. Everyone gets their own 3D perspective, regardless of what others in the room are doing. So in some ways, Howard's big idea is the opposite of 99% of the current direction of XR and would only really make sense if we could make ultra-cheap holographic displays, or if we lived on Hollywood sound stages. The fact that the patent was abandoned suggests perhaps the examiners also found plenty of prior art and challenged the novelty of the idea. The number of references by major companies indicates nothing. Patent lawyers referencing this application couldn't know whether it would be granted or not (it takes years). So they had to play it safe and take note of it. Notice no new references came after it was abandoned. Thankfully, it's not a thing. Terrence Howard had an idea. Good on him. It wasn't novel, nor was it very feasible as described. Move along. Now what's the obvious question for us all maybe, when watching and experiencing these "real time virtual reality" simulations and AI growth and then reading these recent comments here on LinkedIn and when as well seeing the growing number of reports in media about rising abilities of #AI and #VR etc. ... Q: I'd like to ask these: => What is an obvious question ... behind all this?  = How real is our reality? Yes! There is a serious branch of physics (and quantum mechanics and other sciences being involved) into a growing discussion about the "reality" of our world. (touching questions of spirituality and ancient philosophies, too) Be it as it might be - if living in a real world or living in a simulated universe: The responsibility in this world here and now is on us. And: Isn't this then even better, having in mind to maybe live in a sim? Because I get the feeling that we could and should actively build our own positive good future just by being active for this here and coming already now and here today. #Sony drops their #virtualproduction toolkit on the #unrealengine marketplace. Why is this a big deal? Previously, you only had access if you purchased the expensive kit of #venice / #venice2 cameras, or similar for the #arri. It wasn’t possible for other teams or departments to execute #previs in #preproduction, where this work needs to take place. In other words, your #vfx supervisor and vendors, didn’t have a means to understand how something was going to look, to do remote location scouting, setting up shots, and otherwise end up killing expensive production time on-set. Now, anyone can download the tools and handle the preparation that’s critical to this type of work. This is a major step towards #democratization and pushing #vp as THE mainstream studio methodology. Keep in mind that Sony has also invested over $1.5 Billion into Epic Games for technologies released to #streamingvideogames, #uefn, and related #metaverse tech. It’s fair to say we’ll see some rather interesting, new, creative tech developments in the quarters and years to come. If what I saw at #NAB / #NAB2024 is any indication it will be incredible. If we get past the crude definitions of what certain people see as "Ai," we may also notice that there are new emerging kinds of systems that are easily more capable of explaining their conclusions. Meanwhile, we assume the industry will look like what little we know about open #AI today. A lot is possible (good or bad) if we know more.

This is the second year of Meta Quest Mixed Reality Hackathon. I am participating with Cai Plank to build a multiplayer mixed reality game for the casual social gaming category. We are using Meta XR Scene SDK, Hand tracking SDK, Interaction SDK, Netcode, Relay and Lobby. Thank you so much Quentin Valembois and Justin P Barnett for the comprehensive tutorials!
