In preparation for the 2024 CPO Awards, we conducted a massive amount of research on the impact of the Chief Product Officer. Our research shows that companies that have a CPO outperform companies that do not. Do you agree or disagree? Dealing with ***very*** surprising changes will be your most important skill in the next 5 years. As product managers, we often encounter unexpected changes that can disrupt our well-laid plans. Whether it's a feature redesign, shifting priorities, or unforeseen challenges, how we respond can make or break our projects. Here are a few key questions to ask yourself when faced with such situations: How flexible is my current plan? What are the top priorities right now? How can I communicate changes effectively to my team? What steps can I take to adapt quickly and efficiently? How do you handle unexpected changes in your projects? Share your experiences. #productmanager #Agile #projectplanning #adaptability #productdevelopment #leadershiplessons #productor

🚀 How do you get a pre-seed or seed round done *quickly* in NYC? ✅ Assemble a list of over 80 of the earliest-stage fund and angel investors in town ✅ Curate a dozen or so of them based on relevancy ✅ Break bread together. That's what nextNYC is doing with Checkwriters--and applications are OPEN. We're looking for pre-seed and seed NYC founders to pitch at our dinner next Wednesday night. The only criteria is that you have to have at least one *professional* investor committed to a currently open round--be it a fund, angel, scout, etc. 🗓 Applications are due *this Thursday*: https://lnkd.in/epJjny4P 🤝 Shoutout to the folks at Orrick Tech and Rho for helping to make this happen: Orrick is a tech-focused law firm passionate about helping entrepreneurs, innovators and investors push boundaries. 🍭 A TREAT to chat with Sean Flaherty and Paul Gebel at Product Collective's #NYPC last month! 💡 TWO key takeaways around the value of product operations: 1️⃣ *Enables* PMs to make faster and better-quality decisions 2️⃣ Helps PMs focus on the things they were hired to do: deliver value, focus on customer needs, and drive revenue💰 💴 💲 #INDUSTRYConf #productmanagement #productops

👋 Hey product people, curious to know what your information architecture is like for initiatives, discovery plans, problem briefs, and solution briefs (not the content, but the relationship of each artefact) in Notion (or, whatever tool you use) for better team collaboration and efficiency. Do you follow a specific hierarchy or model? What's worked for you and your team? Would love to hear your thoughts!

In this piece, Melissa, talks about how continuous customer interviews can transform product development by focusing on user needs, leading to better prioritization and product decisions, using the example of ThoughtFlow and its founder Kranthi Kiran's shift from idea-driven to evidence-based product development. Stop throwing a North Star Metric at your team without any context. It doesn't work. A NSM is not a concept that will create immediate alignment. "Here's the metric, now go optimize the product to improve the metric." Product teams need more to figure out what is influencing the NSM. And management needs more to prove its value. The CoCoCo for successful North Star Metric implementations 💃🏻 1️⃣ CONTEXT 2️⃣ CONNECTION to business value 3️⃣ CONNECTION to user value AND 💫 BONUS 1 - Co-creation 💫 BONUS 2 - Co-ownership With a shout-out to Amplitude and Daniel Schmidt. A comparison of Amazon vs. Patagonia. And the evolution of Netflix’s NSM over time - with a surprise, if you haven't heard it yet. 👉 Ask Me Anything: Drop your NSM questions in the comment 👇

Last night’s Product Group London saw the group engage in a lively discussion on the topic of the night: Product Culture alongside a great conversation with James Gunaca, Product Management Career Coach (ex-Amazon, ExpressVPN). • Product Culture – the multi-faceted part of the organization that matters to many product people, but is missing or not in great shape for just as many. Some of the features of a great culture were listed as having a clear vision, the why, common goals, guiding principles, communication, leadership, curiosity, shared responsibility, empowered people, trust. In terms of creating a great culture, starting small, making it fun, changing the language used, leadership support, winning hearts and minds and proving the value were all stated as good places to start. • James Gunaca - following the topic of the night, James talked about his experiences in product management. Going from working in marketing agencies to landing roles at Amazon and ExpressVPN, James talked about topics such as how he made the transition, the products he’s worked on (incl. Amazon Echo), being an ‘Interview Bar Raiser’ at Amazon, and how he Is now focused on helping product people achieve their goals as a PM Career Coach. Thank you James Gunaca 🙏. Thanks to everyone who came and engaged in the discussions incl. 3 who passed by on trips from Egypt, Tokyo and Australia 🙏. Thanks to Preqin 🙏 for hosting us and providing the pizza and drinks. See you on 6th June! #tpglondon #prodmgmt #productmanagement #startups #bigcompanies

Thanks for sharing this with the community, Rich. It’s true that much of the cautious approach in product leadership stems from a desire to be great collaborators and uncertainty as to when collaboration becomes over or under functioning. This point in out of scope regarding work assignments is sage: > We product folks often have strong opinions on how work should be divided within teams… and we feel the frustration when Engineering or Design seems unhappy or unproductive. However, we don't own those problems or manage those people. It's important to offer our advice with humility. If you haven’t already—I strongly recommend signing up for Rich’s newsletter and purchasing his newly updated book— Art of Product Management.

Wendy Xiao, Molly Alter, Aaron Liu, and I recently hosted a dinner with CMIO / CIOs from top NY health systems and execs from startups who are building solutions across the care delivery and back-office billing stack. A few takeaways: - Delivering value-based care at scale changes the incentives for health systems in such a way that they require unique point solutions that can help them triage and manage at-risk patients. - While scribing platforms are certainly powerful in the administrative burden they can take off of doctors, their full value may not be unleashed until they can convert notes into the appropriate fields / codes for billing. - More attention needs to be paid to social determinants of health. For example, certain types of new addiction treatment, like gambling, may soon be covered by insurance if data continues to show that there are serious negative health implications for people affected. Treatments like Ozempic are also showing promise in the field of addiction. In the coming years there will an increasing acknowledgment of how interconnected social factors and medical health are across all patient populations. If you’re a healthcare exec looking to learn more about what the next generation of healthcare IT startups are building, or a healthcare startup looking to get involved, please reach out. cc Northzone

I'm thrilled and immensely proud to share that Jackpocket is now officially part of the DraftKings Inc. family. The entrepreneurial journey is often seen as glamorous, but in reality, it's a challenging path filled with anxiety and moments of solitude. When I encounter new entrepreneurs confidently presenting their impressive progress, I often take a moment to ask about their mental well-being. This journey isn't for everyone, but the key to navigating it successfully is surrounding yourself with incredible people. Attributes like creativity, persistence, a thirst for knowledge, and a sense of ownership among team members are crucial for success. However, what I've truly learned is that having genuinely good people to work with is the most significant factor. I owe this achievement to our loyal, dedicated, and kindhearted team who overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to make this happen. This also includes our amazing investors, external vendors and ever-supportive board of directors. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your commitment to this audacious vision. In building our team, we've always prioritized setting egos aside, recognizing that we're all just individuals navigating the complexities of life. While we spend much of our adult lives immersed in our careers, I can honestly say that I've forged some of the strongest, lifelong friendships through Jackpocket. My high school principal used to say, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life,” a phrase that once seemed corny but now resonates deeply. Over the past months, I've had the pleasure of getting to know the incredible team at DraftKings, and I’ve never been more excited about Jackpocket’s future and the opportunity to join a powerhouse like DraftKings. I've come to truly admire their leader, Jason Robins, and I’m eager to learn from him and his team and embark on this journey together. The joke ends here: I guess it takes 11 years to create an “overnight success.” Here’s to the next decade of innovation, teamwork, and overcoming the unfeasible. From Marty Cagan's newest book, comes an interesting nugget... There are 3 axes along which product model brings change - how you build (product delivery) - how you solve problems (product discovery) - how you decide which problems to solve (product vision and strategy) The last point above resonates with me...choosing the right thing to work on in my opinion is the single most important thing for a Product team to get right. #productstrategy #choice #martycagan

The reaction to my original "Tell Me a Product Story" post has been incredible. These conversations have gone in so many directions: I've heard stories from people breaking into product at a mind-boggling scale, how folks are considering their skills and whether doing down a product path is right for them, and hilarious tales of users being, well, users. I've had the chance to ask impromptu questions, accidentally coach, and help people work through product and life problems. I'd love to keep this going and expand the audience. Grab 30 minutes on my calendar to tell me a story about any aspect of product management, even if you're not a PM yourself. If you have folks in your network with product stories to tell, I'd appreciate a repost. https://lnkd.in/d6hwuQJ6

He called me the “best human in the world” in this post so I’m obviously biased, but I genuinely feel that Derek Embry is going to be an absolute steal for any company that picks him up as a Product Designer. Companies so often bias toward hiring only Senior and Staff folks (especially in Product Management & Design) when we want to move quickly with limited headcount and ambitious growth goals. In some cases this can be counter-intuitive. Because in doing so, we can limit the opportunities of our existing teammates who may be seeking to mentor and spend more time on strategic work, and we limit the opportunities of those who are hungry to enter our field and provide value on the ground. Folks who have years of applicable experience without having had the exact title. Folks hungry to roll up their sleeves and do the work that needs to get done, and who view everything as a learning opportunity. Folks like me when I was trying to break into startups and, later, Product Management. Folks maybe like you, reading this, when you made a similar switch. Someone took a chance on us, and it’s the harder (but more rewarding) thing to see the potential in someone versus the lines on the resume. So let’s pay it forward. 🚨 So, if you or someone you know is willing to hire a fantastic Product Designer who just finished the Shift Nudge bootcamp and who has rich experience in tech, product marketing, and growth product, then please point them my way or Derek’s way directly!
