The National Public Housing Museum (NPHM) is the only cultural institution devoted to telling the story of public housing in the United States. Over its history public housing has represented hopeful avenues for people through the provision of stable affordable housing options during a critical time of their lives. It demonstrates the government’s desire and concern for people to “make it”. The museum, as it develops, is a unique place where: · Important history is discovered and recorded. · Many myths are dispelled. · Some unfortunate truths are revealed and examined as is necessary to create better futures. · Some extraordinary triumphs are revealed as is necessary to appreciate and celebrate American success stories. At NPHM, American stories are told through the lives of people. Additionally, it provides a focused avenue to engage in meaningful dialogues that are not dominated by stereotypes and assumptions. It stands to be a foremost center for the examination, research and study of the basic human need of housing in the past, in the present and moving forward into the future. The permanent home for the museum is set to be in an early era former public housing building in Chicago that was saved from the wrecking ball at the request of the museum planners. Saving one of these buildings to preserve this history represents historic preservation of a physical place as well as the preservation of significant American human history and culture.
