Did you know that fiber optic cables were recently recorded to produce speeds as fast as 301 terabits per second? That's about 1.2 million times faster than the average #broadband connection speed we have in our homes and equivalent to downloading 1,800 individual 4K movies in a single second! Despite #fiberoptic technology being invented in 1953, it's abilities and capacity as a technology continue to increase through better understanding and technological advancements being made every day. The 301TB/second speeds were achieved by researchers at Aston University tapping into spectral bands that have never before been used in commercial systems, called "E-band" and "S-band". One of the researchers, Professor Forysiak, stated that the new technology is designed to upgrade existing networks. He says - "It is a ‘greener solution’ than deploying more, newer fibres and cables since it makes greater use of the existing deployed fibre network, increasing its capacity to carry data and prolonging its useful life & commercial value".
