Applications are now being accepted by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, for its Healing Homes transitional housing initiative. The hospital provides two homes in Somerville for transitional housing for Somerset County, NJ individuals or families who have an illness that caused financial hardship and are unable to afford housing. As part of RWJBarnabas Health’s Social Impact and Community Investment Practice, the hospital launched Healing Homes in 2019 with one home. A second home was renovated for the initiative in 2022. Furnishings for the homes were donated by Acme Drapemaster Inc. and Flemington Department Store. The deadline for Healing Homes applications is May 31. An assigned case manager will refer participants in Healing Homes to resources that are designed to help with their individually identified health issues as well as community resources that offer support for basic needs such as employment, transportation, social services and permanent housing. The hospital’s two Healing Homes are two-bedroom ranch homes. One home is handicapped accessible. Each home is available to a single individual or a single family of no more than four. To be considered for Healing Homes, participants must meet specific criteria for consideration, such as: have an illness that has caused financial hardship and makes them unable to afford housing and /or basic cost of living; have limited access to health care; are employed with a steady income but earn below the New Jersey Housing and Urban Development (HUD) income guidelines. Additionally, participants in Healing Homes must demonstrate a willingness to achieve the goals identified by the case manager in their individual progress plan to improve their circumstances. Preference will be given to applicants who are residents in the towns identified in the hospital’s Community Health Needs Assessment with a median household income below the Somerset County average: Bound Brook, South Bound Brook, North Plainfield, Somerset, Franklin and Manville. Representatives from the following organizations serve on the hospital’s Healing Homes Committee: Affinity Federal Credit Union, Bonnie Brae, Central Jersey Housing Resource Center (CJHRC), Pioneer Family Success Center, The Greater Raritan Workforce Development Board, Habitat for Humanity, Safe+Sound Somerset, Somerset County Board of Social Services, Somerset County Community Development, Somerset County Health Department and Housing Authority, Somerset County Human Services, the Alice Project of the United Way of Northern New Jersey and Zarephath Christian Church. #caringcommunity #communityinvestment #socialimpact Serena Collado

In recognition of the month of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH) is highlighting the success of the Westchester Faith-Based Mental Health Initiative. The program, which was formed in 2020, is a partnership between DCMH, faith-based leaders and community mental health providers. The Initiative connects parishioners and congregations with local mental health service providers, focusing on the intersectionality of faith and mental health programs. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “The Westchester Faith-Based Mental Health Initiative includes an educational component, as well as peer-to-peer mentoring to promote suicide prevention efforts and mental health awareness to the faith-based and spiritual communities. If an individual is struggling with the loss of a loved one by suicide, or if they themselves are struggling with their own mental health, they may feel safe confiding in a religious leader. International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) is in final stages of developing a consensus based Standard patient-Centered Outcome Measure Set addressing obesity. Christina Mattina shares a thorough overview of New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (NJHCQI)'s Spring Conference -- Top Health Care Issues at the Ballot Box. Featuring Christopher Whaley , Anand Parekh, and Ben Dworkin, we covered a lot but Affordability was at the top of our list and showed up in our Health Matters Poll of likely NJ voters with Eagleton Institute of Politics. About 3 in 4 New Jersey voters report being very worried or worried about medical costs. Another important issue to NJ voters is reproductive health care and access to abortions. Check our Mattina's article and our poll results. Lots to think about and for policymakers to address to improve not just coverage --- but affordability and access to care. Our speakers cautioned not to look for sweeping change in this election cycle, but there are incremental steps that Employer/Purchasers and States can take.

As we celebrate another maternal mental health awareness month, it's important to understand that maternal health outcomes in the US, continue to decline. And the rates are abysmal for Black and Brown mothers and birthing people. Many of the most devastating outcomes occur during the fragile postpartum window, up to one year after delivery. Including increasing rates of depression, suicidality and self-harm. There are many factors behind the heartbreaking statistics. #CHIWeek Spotlight: The Massachusetts Health and Healthy Aging Funds supports 56 organizations and 60+ of their community partners across the state to address the root causes of health inequities. The City of New Bedford Health Department collaborated with community members, community-based organizations, and additional members of city government to develop the 2024-2028 New Bedford CHIP. They joined forces with Southcoast Health in developing the most recent CHA to combine clinical and public health data for a full view of New Bedford’s health. Preparations for the next CHA our underway with an additional partners (PACE, Fall River Health Department, and Citizens for Citizens), expanding collaboration to the regional level. The FRANKLIN REGIONAL COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS (FRCOG) is facilitating a broad Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Network in the rural 30-town Franklin County and North Quabbin region. CHIP infrastructure includes a Steering Committee and working groups which guide the implementation of 14 priority strategies between 2024-28, as well as paid priority perspective CHIP members who ensure the experiences of those with lived and living experiences are at the heart of the CHIP’s work. The BERKSHIRE REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION acts as the backbone organization for this County Health Initiative which is conducting a CHIP process for the 32 municipalities in Berkshire County. The initiative will organize and engage partners in visioning and collecting data, identifying and prioritizing strategies, and implementing these strategies. The City of Lawrence, Massachusetts participates in the triennial Community Health Needs Assessment done by the hospital and community Health Center. In an effort to deepen community engagement in the implementation process, the City of Lawrence in partnership with UMass Lowell and other community-based partners, will embark on a CHIP, focused on race and health equity, to strategically complement partner efforts to affect change in the health and well-being of those most significantly impacted by compromised social determinants of health. Africano (Waltham, MA) will conduct a CHIP process to further understand the needs of the community and work with other community organizations to address those needs. The CHIP process will primarily engage with Ugandan immigrants in Metrowest and many other service providers and organizations that serve or seek to engage with the community. #MarchforMoms program in June, in Philly will continue to emphasize how community based partners are poised with HOW to improve outcomes for childbearing families without decades of policy debate and state/federal funding. In our third year of lifting up CBOs, these organizations are the heart of the community, providing critical work on slim margins and small staff. These organizations have the trust of the community. These organizations bring cultural congruency to facilitate health of families that often struggle with health literacy and trust with instutionalized care. These organizations have much to share about their work, their needs, and how YOU can help. I challenge every healthcare provider that has not heard the stories of community-based work to set biases aside and listen. NEWS RELEASE Connecticut Enacts Nurse Licensure Compact POSTED 06/06/2024 Gov. Ned Lamont signed the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) into law on May 30, 2024, making Connecticut the 42nd jurisdiction to enact the NLC. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: media@ncsbn.org CHICAGO – Gov. Ned Lamont signed the NLC into law on May 30, 2024, making Connecticut the 42nd jurisdiction to enact the NLC. The compact allows registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) to have one multistate license, with the ability to practice in person or via telehealth, in both their home state and other NLC states.  Gov. Lamont said, “Nursing shortages have put tremendous pressure on the nursing workforce throughout our country, and if we want to improve access to care we must do more to encourage workers to enter this profession and help hospitals and health facilities fill their staffing needs. By entering into this compact with our fellow states, we can eliminate burdensome red tape faced by nurses and aspiring nurses and expand the pool from which hospitals and health facilities can hire.” Licensure requirements are aligned in NLC states for those nurses applying for a multistate license. Requirements include submitting to a federal and state fingerprint-based criminal background check, passing the NCLEX Examination and holding an active and unencumbered license. Senate Public Health Chair Sen. Saud Anwar said, “The last several years have exposed a drastic need in our health care systems – constant staffing crises threaten the quality of care for residents statewide. This compact will change that, making it easier and more accessible for nurses to come to Connecticut and find work, supporting our economy and our state’s health care at the same time. This is a strong step forward for our state in protecting and ensuring public health.” Although the NLC has been enacted in Connecticut, the legislation goes into effect on Oct. 1, 2025, and an implementation process must be completed before its residents will be able to apply for a multistate license, and before nurses in other NLC states who hold a multistate license will be able to practice there.

Through this settlement, the #Olmstead decision significantly impacts nursing home residents by promoting their right to live in home and community-based settings rather than being unnecessarily institutionalized. The landmark settlement approved by the U.S. District Court in Boston, as highlighted by Justice in Aging ,will enable 2,400 individuals in Massachusetts to transition from nursing homes back to their communities, embodying the spirit of the Olmstead decision. Consumer rights to and opportunities for nursing home alternatives are reinforced by this settlement. #gamechanger
