"The TV OS wars are also playing out amid the continued trend of U.S. consumers increasingly turning to smart TVs as their primary streaming video device. During a separate session at the StreamTV Show, Parks Associates’ Elizabeth Parks shared data showing the rise of smart TVs in the U.S., where, as of Q1 2024, 56% said they used smart TVs most often, compared to 39% who said so in Q1 2018. Household adoption of smart TVs in the U.S. has also grown over 20 percentage points since 2019 to reach 68% in Q1 2024." https://lnkd.in/gGqGkTsr

On the service provider side, traditional operators and telcos are looking for TV options to offer and entice or retain customers as they pivot away from traditional pay TV and prioritize broadband growth, where pairing entertainment can help maintain customer relationships for other services. In a recent column on StreamTV Insider, Parks Associates Director Eric Sorensen noted that “telcos are pursuing aggressive options with streaming in order to keep the pay TV business operating for as long as feasible.” Parks Associates research showed that as of Q1 2024 Charter’s Spectrum TV services are in 23% of internet homes, up yoy from its 19% market share in each 2022 and 2023. Sorensen wrote that service providers are adopting streaming bundles to lower operational expenses and to appeal to larger advertisers by enabling ad buying across multiple platforms. “Additionally, bundles help prevent churn of the subscriber completely departing,” wrote Sorensen. “Parks Associates anticipates we will continue to see the reemergence of a new kind bundle as a way for pay-TV providers to reengage and entice lost customers.” https://lnkd.in/gUbgPY8J

It's a new business model for Roku, which is accustomed to making money from hardware. Now, TCL is selling the devices and Roku is left to generate revenue from the platform. That can happen by selling services and channels, similar to how consumers buy mobile apps, and through advertising as more content becomes streamed. "The more engagement we can get with consumers, the more opportunities there are to monetize that experience," Chas Smith Roku senior vice president. This is a cautionary point for all broadband providers, especially those who are deploying Eero devices in the homes of their subscribers. That is "inviting the fox into the hen house." The good news is that there are many ways that BSPs can differentiate beyond "fast and cheap" by offering value-added services that protect homes, kids, seniors, enable roaming across the backyard and the town, connect small businesses and MDUs will innovations that help them thrive. Conveniences like ticket scanning, high-tech scoreboards that show all the stats and replays, and credit card swiping for hotdogs make baseball games more profitable and efficient for stadium owners.
