“Vicente del Bosque, the manager of the Spanish soccer team, once said this about defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets: "You watch the game, you don't see Busquets. You watch Busquets, you see the whole game." I feel similarly about Kerry's contribution to The Real Deal's digital editorial team. She functions as its central node, responsible for so many different aspects of the operation, and pulling her role off with such grace and efficiency, that it’s sometimes difficult to define her value. Kerry started at TRD as our social media coordinator, quickly boosting both our engagement, follower base and the way we promoted stories. Her role evolved and she grew to take on audience development and media relations – because of her efforts, our stories began to be picked up regularly by national and print and broadcast outlets. She was later entrusted with overseeing our nascent video department, and with managing our content coordinators to ensure all our websites have a consistent visual identity. There is no one I more instinctively trust to pull off complicated projects, and no one in the newsroom who is as universally respected as Kerry is. Before her leadership role was even formalized, newsroom staff, in particular the women, came to see her as a mentor. Her patience and generosity are balanced with an extremely well-honed news sense and a genuine excitement for big-impact stories. You watch the newsroom, you don’t see Kerry. You watch Kerry, you see the whole newsroom.”

Judges’ comment: Homeowners who devote whole rooms to model-train collections and a developer who plans to list a 20,000-square-foot penthouse for more than $100 million are par for the course for this upscale newsletter. The WSJ also engages readers, who vote for the house of the week (a Santa Fe retreat, a renovated Tudor in Kansas City or a modern home in horse country?). Ever clever, the newsletter runs the headline: “For Privacy, Homeowners Hedge Their Bets” for a “vegetative screening”…

Judges’ comment: With wow-inducing full-page aerial images of luxurious Miami spots like the exclusive Star Island and Zaha Hadid’s $300 million tower, The Wall Street Journal puts itself a step ahead of some formidable rivals. Drone photography lets readers fly above properties owned by millionaires like Jennifer Lopez. Like the pictures, the stories themselves give vivid details. For example, the Hadid building comes with an indoor and outdoor pool and a helipad (of course). A sobering story,…

A sobering story, packed with numbers, shows how COVID-19 hurt the New York real estate market worse than September 11.

Judges’ comment: In its breezy newsletter, the Journal recaps the week in high-end real estate. It also links to its remarkable Mansion stories -- in this case, to its ski issue. With clever writing (retired catcher Mike Piazza is “rounding third” on a $5.6 million condo) and reader engagement (readers are encouraged to vote for the “WSJ’s house of the week” and share “homeowner horror stories” for an upcoming story), the newsletter brings Wall Street Journal quality with a light twist.

Judges’ comment: With links to Wall Street Journal exclusives (“Travis Kalanick is behind $43.3 million deal for Los Angeles mansion”), and richly reported features (“For the rich, a dilemma: quarantine with staff, or do their own chores”), this website is essential reading for anyone interested in the luxury real-estate market. Readers get the kind of scoops and high-quality profiles, business news, videos, graphics and charts they expect from the Journal. They also get digital-only specials…
